We have 3 JRT, two from weaning (14 & 6) and one we kind of inherited a while back, she's 8.

Our 2 only bark if someone comes up the drive, Inherited one is the yappy dog that gives JRT a bad name . She barks if someone walks past the house, a car drives past, a bird flies past etc etc. We also live next door to a poodle parlour which doesn't help as she likes to give it large to the 'ponces with their haircuts' ;)

She seems to spend a lot of time barking pointlessly when we are out according to guy over the road. She has access to the garden all day and obviously company of the other two dogs. I'm normally home by 1pm so they're only without 'people company' for a few hours. Judging by the state of the lounge when I get home they're not sleeping much

I've done a search on here and reading other posts I can confirm that she is not bored, stressed, in pain. She sometimes does it at home if we're not in the room but a quick shout of shut up and she does. However I'd like to try and knock it on the head (barking not the dog) as we live in a semi and have lovely neighbours.

Can anyone suggest a collar to try ? had a look on ebay and prices vary greatly so don't want to buy a cheap one thats no good or an expensive one that's equally rubbish.

Thankyou.

Our patterdale loves the sound of his own voice and will bark at any noise - real or imagined. We don't let him into rooms near the front of the house, which seems to help our ears.

Can't spray her with a water pistol unless I can get her from 4 miles away at work !!!!

Bach remedies - she's not stressed or upset, just a gobby cow. Spoke to her previous owner a couple of weeks ago and she asked if she still barked all day as it really used to annoy her neighbours. She never stopped her barking as she hated her neighbours..... She thought it was all rather amusing sadly.

Press send to early. The only room I can shut her in away from the front of the house is either the dining room but that has glass doors so she'll see into the sitting room or the kitchen where she can get it into the garden. She barks at noises to so not really worth shutting her away from the front. I'll popping the vet later and see if they can suggest anything :)

How much exercise does she get ? What is she fed on ? Do you do any training with her?

It sounds like it might be a touch of seperation anxiety, which might have been going on in her previous home. Coupled with her terrorist tendancies !

Definitely no adversives, spray collar/water pistol. I would think she is stressed - new home etc She needs to be tired when you leave her, leave filled Kongs ( frozen are even better) etc, so she has other things to think about., tired + nice food that takes a while to eat and relaxes the dog = sleep. I would also block her access to any windows/garden where there are triggers for her.

Good points and worth trying.

She gets at least an hours walk per day. She had severe weight issues before we got her so she has the least amount of food possible ( both wet and dry). She lived on a diet of crisps and snacks before we got her.
Her recall is very good. She would never come back to previous owner as would get a clout for 'taking to long'. We can take her up the woods and only have to call her a couple of times if she's been out of view to long. She's the most adorable little dog and sits there wagging her tail on stop. I would not put her behaviour down to being stressed. She's had 8 years of being allowed to do what she wanted before we got her. She's killed 3 longs already and is very protective over food whereas my 2 don't seem to bother.

Should add the exercise is up the woods, not on a lead so lots of running plus access to the garden all day and they do the wall of death everyday in the lounge !

No as I'd have to take them out at 4am ! (postie)
As I say she had 8 years of doing what she wanted so probably just have to accept that's her ! Just didn't like to think that she was annoying the neighbours, doesn't bother us as obviously we're not there when she's doing it. She is the most independent dog I've ever known.

This is her chillaxing after a walk ! She's in this position 95% of the time.

Sorry if it's huge but on my phone so can't edit :)

CC, I agree. She was an only child whose mum worked in London so was on her own all day or packed off to the grandparents who spent all their time at the pub hence the crisp and snack diet. Worked out that she's actually 10 so I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks as the saying goes :)
