Hi there,

I have just recently inherited a western style saddle however, I know nothing about horses, saddles or anything equestrian. A friend of mine said its either western or mexican and maybe worth looking into as it seem very good quality.

So who would I ask to identify it and value it?

I would have posted some pictures but it says I am not allowed to :blue:

Thanks
John

If its nice quality Mexican or western you ought to make a bit of money. Very nice quality saddle would be worth at least a few hundred pounds. Maybe have a search on google for saddlers local to you and phone and ask if they do western tack? Or a western group on facebook might be able to help

You need to use Photobucket for pictures.

And as to the saddle, it is sadly likely to sell for very little as that is the way of second hand saddles, regardless of quality. You could ask in your local tack shop for the name of a saddler who could value it. Try using Google or look in the phone book for tack shops and saddlers. Good luck.

If it's Mexican then it may not be worth much. Mexican saddles are not sought after unfortunately. Depending on the brand it could be worth some money if it is a good make. What is the name on the tag? And the number? If you can post a photo that would be best for us to give you a valuation on the saddle.

I have on loan a mexican western saddle, but mine is the only animal in many years it has fitted on. some local saddle fitters have valued it at around £300 despite this. it is in pretty good condition despite it's age and soooo comfy.

Okay now that saddle could be worth some money. It looks pretty old and looks to be built on a McClellan tree (or similar). Not sure what the market in the UK would be for it though and not sure who would have the knowledge there to value it.

This isn't necessarily true - some second hand saddles will sell for well over £1000...

Not sure about western ones but it looks nice. You would be better getting it valued by a saddler rather than in a tack shop as tack shops generally only sell common brands. Google 'western saddle fitter' and your area and you may have some luck. It is highly likely that you will get at least £300 for it, possibly more than £500. If it is a really good make (which I have no idea about western ones) you could be looking at £750-1000...

A saddle will give you a better idea though

It looks to be an antique Mexican Charro saddle ... you would be best advised to contact a western saddler for a valuation, don't sell it too cheap. Your market is slightly limited as it would interest a collector rather than a rider and your market could well be in the USA rather than the UK

It looks an interesting saddle and I'd definitely seek advice from a Western saddler. It looks like it needs some nourishmant though, so a good soaking in leather oil or saddle soap. Have you Googled the makers to see if they still exist? There is http://wes-uk.com who may well be able to help you.

^^ OP please don't go soaking it in oil.

If it needs a clean give it a wipe over with a damp sponge and google or ask on here how and what to clean it with,
Saneta, saying to a self-confessed non horsey person to soak something in oil is quite likely to get it ruined, if they take you literally.

I was just going to say this ^^ please do NOT do anything to this saddle. It's a collectors saddle and not intended for use any more. You could potentially drop the value of the saddle markedly if you were to tamper incorrectly with it.
