Inheriting ponies

Just finalising arrangements to collect the two ponies I've inherited from my godmother who passed away in September.

I've already got a New Forrest, a Connemara and an ex-racehorse and will soon be adding an arab and a dartmoor yearling to the collection.

Anyone got any suggestions as to what I should do with the yearling? I've never had one that young before. . . .

I'm also a little concerned about travelling them - the arab hasn't been moved since he was transported from Surrey to Devon 5 years ago and the yearling has only travelled once and that was when he came from the sales . . .

Any ideas?
 
Firstly Im sorry to hear about your godmother. Providing both are healthy there's no reason not to travel them together. Is it trailer or wagon? Either way Id load the arab first (hopefully with no fuss & lots of quiet praise) then the yearling, hopefully its been handled at least to lead? Bottom line is you have to move them, so they have to get in!

My only concern would be the partition in a trailer, normally at yearling age Id leave it in, but if he's very tiny perhaps removing it & travelling them as "mare & foal" might help? With the yearling tucked under the arab's nose at the front?

I dont travel mine in boots/bandages unless a very long journey & I leave rugs off (they get hot & if the rug slips on a yearling in a confined space they panic) Make sure you have water to hand, & small haynet tied up off the ground & no feed buckets left in!

Keeping my fingers crossed that they'll be ok.

I've got tack and bits to move as well so am getting a transporter (pre-warned about the fact that they haven't travelled much) to drive them - I also didn't fancy the 4 hour drive each way in my lorry. I'll take my car.

I've been asking the people who are looking after them at the moment to handle the yearling as much as possible so hopefully he'll be ok. I saw them when I was down in Devon for her funeral and he would just about be lead but wan't too happy about it.

Just hope he's chilled out a bit. The arab's fairly laid back so that should help.
 
i cant be much help im afraid but sympathies about your god mother and good luck for you with your 2 new ponies!! are you planning to keep them for yourself or sell or loan?
 
Sorry to hear about your Godmother. As the horses know each other they should give each other moral support on the journey. When you get them home and they are settled start to handle the yearling lots. Grooming, running hands down legs , leading etc. Enjoy them both.
 
I'm planning on keeping the arab - he was a rescue when she got him so don't feel I can pass him on.

I'm not sure about the dartmoor - he's going to be a bit small for me!! though I'm not that big so sure he would carry me (my godmothers old dartmoor was fine with me riding him) but we'll see how it goes.

I'd have to be very picky with where he went if I did find him a new home, but equally 5 is a bit excessive especially considering I work full time and am sometimes away at clients!
