Injecting alcohol experiences

After investigation for lameness issues it appears my horse has very aggressive ring bone and arthritis in his hind cannon bone and surrounding joints - the other foot is totally clean, so its just the one leg.
Anyway, after discussions with my vet he is proposing that he gives him an alcohol injection which apparently works well mostly and gives him a good chance of returning to work.
Having never heard of this treatment before I have now done a little research on-line which has been helpful but would appreciate it if anyone has any recent experience of this treatment could tell me your story and outcome.

We tried steroids in the hocks, which worked initially but were very short lived, so moved on to the alcohol. No problems with the treatment, and the hocks look much better, but as the horse is now lame in front they haven't had proper testing!

is the aim of this to deaden the nerves? My horse had it done in his hocks but the aim was to achieve fusion of the joint. I'm not sure what the aim would be in other parts of the leg. Sadly it didn't work in my horses hocks and he went on to have surgery instead.
