I just got told I was 'cruel' and that I was 'choking my poor dog'

Jack's weight is creeping up again, not unhealthy but at the top end so I'm making a real effort with his evening walks. Because he can just mooch along and let me drag him in his harnesses I've been walking him on his short rope lead. It's loose when he's at heel but if he drops off the pace it tightens and as a result he's been getting a proper work out in the evenings.

He was panting since we'd already done 1/2 mile and he dropped off the pace a little for a moment when a old biddy walked round the corner. She proceeded with the 'cruel and choking my dog rant' and since I didn't want to loose my temper I just walked round her and carried on , with Jack happily trotting at my heel on a slack lead

How after one second can she feel she's in the right to go off at someone  . Gah!!

*sigh*

I'd never take her to a shoot, she'd have a fit seeing all those poor spangles and labs getting choked to death on their oh-so-cruel rope leads :p

When people have a go at me for using these devices of torture, or choke chains, I'm hard pressed not to wrap them round people's necks. Or pop the lead onto the dead ring, hand over the lead, smile sweetly and say: 'Here you go! Your turn!'

(Having said that I always walk on the dead ring and pop it over if we are going anywhere where there will be PEOPLE! DOGS! or WOOLLY JUMPERS!)

Haha, she'd love me :D Otto gets clocked on the head with the handle of my rope lead everytime he goes in front of my heel :D
I also swing my walking stick like a pendulum in front of me, so he gets that in the face if he dares step out of line :D

But then I've always known I was cruel :D

I always feel very smug when I see people with Springers dragging them along - the ones where the dog is almost flat out on the floor, hacking and wheezing with the sheer effort of heaving it's owner along, and I've got 5 (and it used to be 7) spaniels in one hand trotting along at heel :D :D

I swing the lead around in a circle sometimes, I got it out of an old book by Ernest H Hart, full of pics of lovely American ski-slope types from the 1970s. Slapped myself up the face with it a fair few times, but hey :p

My favourite is when the rope lead is down somewhere around the straining, hacking spangle's shoulders, erm, chocolate teapot, anyone?!

Annette, Bella is a bugger for walking behind me too, I think I walk too fast for her :p

Lol...glad it's not just me then ;)

Although in his defence he does have little legs so he has an excuse to be slow ;) Never had any problems with him pulling though so lesser of two evils I suppose. :p

Ha, you pleb! I hit OH with it fairly regularly.. of course it is completely accidental... ;) :D :De

It's normally the old favourite, harness and a chain lead around here! I like to walk as close as possible to them, just so they realise Spaniels can walk at heel, I swear half of them use the excuse 'Oh, he's a Springer, this is how they behave..' :D
