I've had a couple of quotes to install post and rail fencing in my paddock. Both contractors have the required machinery, eg. tractor/auger.

A local builder asked if he could quote for the job and it comes in considerably cheaper. The only problem is he is planning on digging in the posts manually and securing with road stone. I expressed my concern that they wouldn't be as sturdy but disagrees.

Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

thanks.

Digging in is hard work but is possible if he needs the work. However personally I would expect to ensure they are dug to required depth and cemented in if you want a good solid fencing. I have seen farmers do half posts which I dont think are as strong(just be aware). So whoever you go with make sure its what you want. If you are talking huge area then I would probably go with contractor as they may clear any scrub etc. And the hole borer would do it in fraction of time etc. Its up to you if you can agree to certain depth, materials used etc. I wouldnt just stick in the mud as this is what we do and the mud shrinks etc and the posts wobble .
