Has anyone had any success with an instant calmer for shows just while I try and get my boy used to going? Not needed daily - he just gets very tense in new locations. Global Herbs supercalm perhaps? All experiences welcome and obviously I am trying to get him out as much as poss to quiet stress free occasions. thank you x

There is no quick fix. The only calmers that will work 100% are banned in competition (Chamomile - contains bisoprolol/bisaprolol - not sure on spelling, and Valerian - Valeric acid)

Vitamin and mineral based calmers may work (B Vitamin - Thiamine, Niacin, etc and Magnesium type ones. Brewers Yeast contains B Vitamins). If they work, then you need to look at your horses diet as the only horses that these calmers will work on are those that have an imbalance in one of those vitamins or minerals in their diet.

Good as Gold contains Tryptophan (which is an essential amino acid and the biochemical precurser to serotonin and melatonin), Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) and Vitamin E
KER's B Quiet contains Thiamine
Kelato's Betacalm contains Tryptophan, Magnesium, Vitamin E and Thiamine.

The Global Herbs Supercalm looks to be ok, just be rally weary of anything containing Chamomile and/or Valerian... I know of one or two people over here who have been caught out using this blend that is super effective but returned positive swabs because it contained both Valerian and Chamomile.

Rescue Remedy may help, but it is not a calmer. The only thing I have found that is 100% effective is time and experience.

Thanks for replies. Yes I understand that time and experience are the only real things that will help. This is why I want to get him out as much as possible and make it as calm as possible to increase his positive learning experiences. If I can find something to just ease him along then I thought that would be worthwhile for the immediate future. I know from previous experience he reacts very badly to valerian, it actually makes him worse which I discovered it can do in a number of cases. I knew that valerian was banned but didnt realise the restrictions on chamomile so thanks. I havent heard of the good as gold ones - will look into these, and also the supercalm. Any other experiences?
