Just a query here...If someone was having an assessment on teaching a beginner lesson (lead rein), would it matter if the person being taught was experienced?
No, I believe the person is a student working towards a qualification, and is being assessed on how they teach as part of this? A practical teaching test.
Do you mean that the rider should be a beginner/have had a handful of lessons? Would it be alright if the rider had ridden for many years, had many lessons, was up to cantering/jumping standard?
It is common for PTT students to have to practice lead rein lessons on competent riders - especially in college situations.
It can be a useful tool at the very beginning ('you forgot to tighten the girth...your less balanced rider would have fallen off' sort of thing) but not necessary. It is impossible to get experience of the issues faced by beginners and therefore the best ways to correct them if you have only ever taught 'pretenders'! Once you have learnt rising trot, as much as it is fairly easy to do sitting trot as though you never have before, when asked to try and rise you will find the rhythm pretty easily. Most beginners will not.
If I were assessing someones ability to teach beginners, I would like to see them teach a beginner. Can someones partner or friend be roped in?
Thanks for the replies! It's not me (I am the rider in question but I am a complete novice in my opinion and lost all confidence), a friend of a friend is teaching. I just wondered as the ideal is apparently someone who's had a couple of lessons!
