Hi all

Wanting to pick your brains
wink.gif

I have recently moved yards and am now based nearer Newbury in Berkshire. I was previously having lessons with Craig Nicolai (NZL eventer) who is amazing and I got on with him really well but he is in Pangbourne and its too far for him to come really and I cant book my school for lessons during the week and as he is eventing at the mo its not really convinient. I now have transport so am planning on going up to him once a month but would like to get some regular lessons under my belt again so that I can have some sessions in between.

My boy has been out of proper schooling work for a few months for several reasons so I am looking to get back into the level we were at before (scheduled for our first intro) and get moving again.

I'm not bothered about qualifications, just want someone who is sympathetic, confidence building and able to push me out of my comfort zone without scaring me!! And can do weekends at my yard!

Anyone know anybody they could recommend?!

Lucky you! I had a course of lessons with Craig Nicolai before moving up from Intro to PN on a particularly tricky horse and my horse was totally transformed in a very short time - basically fast-tracked his training by six-months and he then flew through PN and onto Novice with no dramas! Why don't you do as I did and leave your horse with him for a few weeks training and go there for lessons on him? - it would give both of you a boost and get you back where you left off and then you can tick over with monthly lessons. Don't know if you've been to his yard at Cane End Stud but all I can say is wow! Absolutely amazing place. Makes sense to stick with a trainer who knows you and your horse rather than have to back track over old ground with a new trainer. Newbury isn't really that far from Cane End, only a couple of junctions up the M4.

I think thats a good idea to stable your horse with him especially as you have done so well with him, seems a shame to be moving trainers. If you do want to try someone new for jumping I have heard good things about Paul Crago.

I would thoroughly recommend Paul as well, though I doubt he could do weekends at your yard at the mo, he's off competing loads. Agree with poster above that it would be good to stick with your current guy, have heard good things about him, but if its not possible have a look here www.paulcragoshowjumping.co.uk & give Paul a ring, he's not that far from you & has done a real fab job with Kizzy & me.

I would love to send him to Craig for some intensive training but my boy has a real fear of people and new places since his attack and he wouldn't be happy without me

Not trying to be precious about it but its not something I would be happy doing with him. Great idea though!!

Why don't you talk to him about your horses' issues? He does a lot of work with horses that have been through physical & psychological trauma. I know last autumn he received from an owner a totally wild six year old mare who had not been handled since she was about six weeks old and was absolutely petrified of people and of being inside. Not quite sure how he does it but within three months the horse was jumping double clears BN and now going double clear PN and follows him around like a puppy.
He's just one of those rare people who have got the knack of instilling trust in horses and I bet he could help your lad through his fears.
