I'm looking for an instructor, preferably freelance (i.e. someone who will come out to me), in the Eden Valley (south pennines) across to Durham / Darlington area.

I have someone that I usually use, and that is very good in getting to the root of problems and seeing what the horse is telling me. I respect this person completely as a horseman, and think that they are pretty amazing, but the thing is that while I am actually having the lesson, I generally feel completely inadequate and don't have a very good time. It would be nice to find someone that I feel more comfortable and on the same wavelength with.

I'm not a wimp, and don't mind behing told that I'm doing something wrong, but I often get to the point in the lesson that I can't do what I'm being told for feeling totally useless and although I am left with essentials to work on, I often feel that I haven't anything specific to work towards other than generally trying to get the horse working 'better'. Half of the dilemma is that I kind of feel I should stick with this person as I respect them and their results so much, but on the other hand, I don't really enjoy it, so what to do? My horse does improve after they leave I put what they said into practice, but in terms of progressive training, I don't feel like I'm moving forwards.

Half the problem is that up till now I haven't been able to afford regular lessons, but am planning on having two per month at least now, as I have new PT time job.

So, recommendations please.

I have heard that John Collier at Blackdyke farm, Carlisle is very good, but I would prefer not to travel that far if I can help it - I am south of Penrith.

Doughnuts if you get this far...wine if you reply!

Qr I go to Blackdyke and he is very good.

Why not try the Chapplehows at the Crackenthorpe stud Nr. Appleby, they aren't too far and may also travel to you.
Suzie Gibson teaches at Greenlands on a regular basis but I understand she is quite expensive.
Denise Richardson is teaching and as far as I am aware is freelance, she is at Hesket Newmarket, not too far from Penrith.
Blackdyke, if you can get there is definately an excellent training centre but as far as I know none of the instructors are freelance.

Oh yes I can second the recommendation for Susan Bowman. She is very good and very encouraging. A friend also uses a freelance that travels to her but she is based in the North of the county so not sure how far she would travel. Let me know if you are still looking for more ideas though and Ican ask her. Also not sure if they have anyone based at Newtown Rigg at all?
