Has anyone had insulation built into an American barn / stables? Am putting up a new building (in black) and considering getting it insulated as our Summers just seem to be (in general) getting warmer. The barn will have doors either end and windows in the back of each stable but just wondering about how effective extra insulation would be and the options / costs etc. Thanks.

I would prefer to put in extra ventilation to help keep it cool and prevent breathing issues, possibly in the roof, insulating will help stop it getting too hot or cold but will be a breeding ground for bugs, will become extremely stuffy if closed up in winter, my barn is fairly open and I have found the horses are generally much healthier being in fresh air and extra rugs when required, in summer the boxes are in shade, if there is a breeze it helps the air flow.

The only cool American barn I knew was one with massive open doors at each end and windows in the stables. I agree with be positive, seems that ventilation is key to keeping it less stuffy! Also makes it much nicer environment for the horses.

What extra ventilation would you suggest / do you use? I really want to go with a black building which obviously isn't a great colour in terms of staying cool but the building will have a large door either end, (the building will be 84ft by 36ft), pedestrian door in one side, ridged vented roof, 8 windows (in the back of the stables" and will be clad with vent air. I've put the stables on the side that gets the prevailing wind.
What did you use to clad? Not sure I'm keen on the foam :-/ Thanks.
