my boys test came back yesterday at 349.. should be 80-85 is that really bad? he already has cushings. the acth came back to at 20. hes on 2 prascend a day. so thats good.... vet said diet and exercise...but hes a good weight... 12.3hh and 312kg..

Yes it is bad.

My geldings was 250 and the vet was concerned at that point.

Does he get lami alot? Is he cresty etc?

IR is treatable, they will prob reccomend he goes on metformin. Mine stayed on the tablets for about 3 months and then with a good diet and lots of exercise we managed him well until we sadly lost him to colic.

hes had laminitis in the past, not fat, vet wants weight on him.. he dosent want him on metformin, new reserch shows it dont really work.. he just said no grass correct diet and exercise. hes phoning me back with a plan tomorrow..

Metformin did help in my horses case. He was on box rest so couldnt do the exercise part for a few months
Always found he was incredible sensitive to the grass and even 10 mins longer on the grass would upset him

Met formin has helped my mare. She's only been on it 12 days and her fat pads are softening and disappearing. This never happened when she lost the same amount of weight before.

^^ agree. Mine waa very similar. Metformin gave him a kick start, also had him on cinnamon powder which worked well when he came off the metformin.
If the levels dont drastically come down you will find come spring lami will reappear. Is he ridden? Found exercise worked a treat aswell

yes just put his shoes back on after a yr without, thanks to a barefoot trimmer messing them up....!!

Mine was semi retired when i brought him back into work but found tonnes of hacking and a good fast walk did wonders for his wasteline and insulin levels

do you think hes over weight then? 12.3hh 312kg i give him 1 stubbs scoop of hi fibre cubes a day split between 2 feeds... 6kg of soaked haylage soaked for 10 hrs...

Metformin is cheap compared to Pergolide/Prascend - about £15 per 300 tablet tub from my vet, although my boy had to have 28 tablets per day - he is 16h though!

Was your IR test a fasting test or the glucose loading one?

If he isn't fat (which he isn't) and he isn't lame (which he isn't) you should be able to manage his IR with diet and excersise like you are... you will just have to be very very careful with the spring grass.

Metformin made my 22 year old Cushings boy very ill, so even though he tested IR on the glucose loading test, we took him off the Metformin and managed him on Pergolide alone.

My younger boy tested positive for EMS/IR in Jan 2011 and has been successfully managed on Metformin until being diagnosed with Cushings a month a go... he is now on Pergolide and too skinny
