Hey im just wondering if anyone can give me some advise on accident cover. Im now looking after a TB ex racehorse which i had a nasty accident with at the weekend, we are both fine luckily but my mum made me think about this! Iv never worried about it as have been living at home but i am moving out on my own on friday and obviously need to start thinking about getting some insurance incase I get injured and cannot work! how do i pay my rent etc! Espcecially now as I am riding a rather hyper TB. Im just wondering if there is some sort of small print that I may not pick up on hence riding is a dangerous sport etc I dont want to be paying out for insurance and then find if the time comes that they wont pay out due to it being a high risk sport? Any advise good or bad or any recommendations?? Thank You x

Not top add to your worries but another thing to consider is what happens if you/the horse you are riding cause an accident that injures other people or property.

E.g. if you come off the TB and it runs in front of a car causing whip lash to the driver who breaks to avoid it and/or a huge dent in the bonnet then you could (I'm not a legal expert so don't rely on this too much, it just gives you an idea) be liable for
- injury compensation to the driver
- repairs to car for the driver
- new tack and horse(!) for horse's owner
- new fence for farmer if horse gets thrown through one in the crash etc, etc

If you are a BHS gold member, not being paid to ride (I think, you'll need to check this) and behaving responsibly then the rider insurance they offer should cover that kind of thing. You can buy it separately from another insurer too although I think it will be more expensive if you are being paid to ride the horse.

If you are going have a mortgage and/or pension plans and benefits with certain employers you might have incapacity (being too injured to work) cover through them but you'll need to double-check for terms and conditions. You *can* usually take a certain amount of time off employment as paid sick leave unless you're self-employed. Worth checking. if you're worried about what would happen if you became unable to work (or at least in the same kind of role) permanently that is obviously different, and I imagine would cost you more to insure.

ok thank you its very helpful will look it up this evening in more detail. Im not being paid to ride and am a very careful rider we are lucky also as most of our hacking is off road! I know i get no kind of cover from my work except normal sick pay which would not be enough to cover my rent every month now so do need to put something in place! Will hopefully never need it but you can never be too careful. Thanks Again
