My shettie was diognosed with cushings late nov last year, and although the insurance are paying out for my claim untill the 12 months are up. Obviously once that is up cushings will then be excluded on my insurance for him, the problem with cushings is it can cause a multitude of complications as the illness progresses so I am told.

Is it worth continuing with illness cover after the 12 months as I was told the insurance will blaim a lot of illnesses on his cushings from now on and refuse to pay out. I am thinking about just covering him for acidental injury on the vetinary side of his insurance.

Does anybody have any experience with their insurance and any further illness claims after a diognoses of cushings, thanks in advance.

i have a cushings pony as you no snoopy and he is still insured as he could injury himself badly ie limbs. eyes etc could get colic respirator infection so many other problems so personaly i would keep going

I have had this debate to myself too as my lad had a laminitis episode that I have claimed on and have another few months left of the 12 months...although I am not planning on needing to claim now (touch wood).
As the OP mentioned, there are other things that can happen that you may need to claim on and you do not know that the insurance would or would not pay out on a claim or associate it to the cushings.
I was told that I had to keep the vets bills part of my insurance going as otherwise there would be no point to the insurance and that is compulsory as otherwise there would be no point to it. So I have carried on with it as even if I put the monthly amount to one side for a rainy day...it would never amount to enough if I needed to claim. I would stick with it to be on the safe side.

I have recently cancelled the insurance on my cushings pony. The premium was £350 and after talking to my NFU office it seemed very little would be covered. The policy came through saying any previous conditions she had suffered from would be excluded, obviously that meant laminitis, abcess etc which are linked to cushings. Also as she has had mild colic in the past that too would be excluded even though I never claimed for it. It seemed unlikely they would even pay out for her death unless due to accident, if the decision was made on humane grounds due to a laminitis attack or similar then no cover.:(

My shetties insurance is only £9 per month as he is really not worth £££s , but he will stay forever so it,s not really about the cash, just thought it might be pointless carrying on with the vets bit except keep accidental injury bit.

He has had no real illness with his cushings except being a little footy so I took him off the grass and rang the vet, by the time vet came he was sound although vet did say he had the start of lami. And after a closer look we both decided to have a cushings test done as he was not overweight at all.

He has had no other problems but say for instance if he did have a abcess would the insurance blame it on cushings, same would go with colic. I suppose i,m just musing on the future hyperthetically it would be interesting to know.

One of the reasons I cancelled the insurance is that she certainly isn't worth £350 , she is about 11 hh, native type, getting on in years etc. I have been told that abcesses are often associated with cushings so it all depends on your insurance company if they linked it. I don't think colic is connected in any way but in the cse of the NFU they were excluding any condition the pony had suffered in the past, and she has had a couple of mild doses so they would have excluded that as well.:(
