If you dont mind me asking, how much are you trying to insure him for? as if its under so much you dont 'need' one. But then again, if you were changing companies since you bought him, you wuldnt have an up to date one. Ask to speak to someone higher up the chain and explain that. They cant request a new one...

how much are u insuring him for??

With petplan you can insure up to £5000 if not having lou without a vetting????

Most insurance companies will ask for a vetting if insuring with lou and sum insure is over £2500 or if with lou and over £5000

I would second NFU as helpful.

Being a vet myself I vetted my own horse! Didn't bother with a full vetting but gave him a good check over and looked carefully for soundness issues. NFU were quite happy with this.

They were also quite happy about the possibility of me claiming for my own work should anything expensive happen to him (the drugs are still expensive even if you don't have to pay for vet callout!). Never had to test them on it luckily, but they seem to be more flexible than most.

I've just had a trial with petplan on changing cover for my older horse. Found them very hard work as they wanted a VC to add vets fees to my policy BUT if i cancelled the policy and set up a new one they wouldn't need a VC!!! Very frustrating and I thought they were better than that - especially as we've insured the horse with them for about 14 years. They don't appear to actually 'underwrite' policies, they are more fixed to set rules and that's that.

However, I was told, as my horse is insured for £1500 (I am reducing his sum insured) that I wouldn't need a vet cert at that value.

I would possibly ring them again and query it to be honest.
