Will they insure a non-vaccinated horse? I appreciate you would have exclusions for equine flu and tet, but does anyone know if this is permissable?

Can you insure your horse for public liability only? Seeing the story of the woman being sued for £3.8 million for "allowing" them to stray onto a main road and cause an accident has made me think.....

Yes you can insure you horse but they won't be covered for any flu or tetanus related illness. However that said check with each company.

I would strongly reccomend vaccinating for tetanus even if you don't have the flu part!

Its not just injections - im insured wiht petplan and one of their conditions is that my horse has annual teeth checks x

On petplans terms and conditions it states that your horse must be vaccinated, wormed and have its teeth checked to avoid voiding your insurance.

Yes you can insure just for 3rd party liability. Join the BHS for £55 (ish) and it is included for all horses you may own with their gold membership

To be honest I don't think that many horse insurers will insure you if you don't vaccinate your horse. They will see you as a moral hazard basically - as if, if you're not bothered about vaccinating your horse, what else might you not care about doing?!

When you are applying for cover with most insurers (of not all), part of your application will be a declaration that is likely to state (amongst other things) that you declare the horse is vaccinated against flu and tetanus.

At the end of the day why woudn't you vaccinate against, at the very least, tetanus? I certainly would NOT have taken a horse on cover when I worked at an insurer if they declared they had not vaccinated it. Sure, they may lie but on their own head be it - if there was a claim for either of these illnesses you would not be covered and your policy could be voided which would cause you difficulties should you want to insure a horse again.

At the end of the day, if you wnat insurance then vaccinate your horse. In fact vaccinate it anyway!! I would nevere want to see a horse suffering from tetanus, it is by all accounts horrific!

Oh and Narkymare - just an additional note, I did try reply to you PM but it says you are not accepting PMs! I have not just ignored your message! lol

Sorry, should have been more specific... I meant not vaccinating ANNUALLY... there is no evidence to substantiate that a horse NEEDS a tetanus every year.

Thanks though :)

KBIS state on my policy that horse must be vac for tetanus nothing mentioned about flu, have annual dental check and be wormed. How I would prove worming I have no idea!

I don't see why you wouldn't get liablility only cover as that has nothing to do with the health of the horse.

Yes you can insure for liablility only.

You can indeed insure for liability only but most insurance companies (for horse policies) do not do liability cover in isolation. You would be better joining the BHS or similar organisation if you just wanted liability cover.
