Hi all

Those of you with youngsters who do you use for insurance?

I've got a 16 month old filly and have been looking around for insurance for ages, I've had some stupid quotes of around £32 a month (am only paying £37 a month for my 16 year old mare whos covered for vet fees, tack/saddlery, public liability, death/theft/straying etc).

She isn't doing much at the moment - just mainly in the field with the occasional inhand walk on the roads

I used KBIS for mine at that age. however, like yours he was out doing nothing but had to be covered for "foal, dressage, jumping" , etc as that was the lowest cover they did. That was at £28 a month when all he was doing was out in the field or coming in to his stable.

I use KBIS, foals are insured for £1000 but no vet fees and PL is with BHS, costs £63 per foal per annum. If you want vet fees add about another £250.
Don't forget that although they might 'just' be in the field, they are still very high risk as most accidents happen in the field; I've actually lost 3 from accidents in the field that were nobody's fault, just freaky things.

I pay the same for my 16 month old as I do my 7 year old, it's the vets fees more than value of horse, both insured upto £5000 with NFU

Bare in mind that if you pay monthly and then have to claim for loss of animal that most companies will deduct what you still owe on the annual premium from the amount you receive or ask you to pay that amount before they will pay out and that's just when you don't want to be hassled about anything which is why I always pay my premiums in full (on my card though!) as it's one less thing to have to think about.

One of mine is 18 months and is insured by Pet Plan for just under £11 a month, thats with a value of £250 and pretty standard vets fees cover. He falls in to the lowest insurance category that covers youngsters and horses at grass with no walking on roads

My other is 3.5 years old and is also insured with Pet Plan but although he spends 99% of his time on my land he has to be covered in a higher category as he comes under the category that covers 'breaking and schooling' his insurance is £23 for the same cover but he is covered if he goes out on the roads
