Was wondering if anyone has made a claim with their insurance for a horse with bahoviural problems, as my vet wants to investergate my horses bahoviral probelems as he thinks they may be caused by either gastric ulsers or by her ovieries. So I was just wondering if any one has been able to claim from their insurance to investate to cause of a bahovioural problems. I haven’t spoken to my insurance company yet I’m unsure if insurance companies will pay out to invesergate the cause of bahivoural problems.

We claimed for our moody mare! She just changed suddenly, so the vet did and internal to check her ovaries, took bloods, then prescribed a 3 week course of Regumate. Insurance didnt question it and mare is now sorted!

I think you should be ok - if the vet thinks there is a physical issue then it isn't actually a behavioural problem per se -ie the behavioour is a sign of an underlying problem just as pawing the ground is a sign of colic.

as long as your vet finds a cause to the behaviour. otherwise they wont pay because you cant claim for behaviour. i have had this argument with the insurance company. even though i ended up taking the ovaries out (payed myself). when they investigated my mare the specialist came back saying it was behavioural.

You could do with the vet stating some additional medical symptoms in the report requesting the tests. If the investigation is based solely on behavioural problems, the tests are done and the horse is found to be healthy the tests won't be covered. If a physical problem is found they would be covered. Usually the vets are as helpful as they can be. If your horse has any other indications of a physical problem eg headshaking, short stride, unusual eating habits - anything, get them to include it in the report to strengthen the medical justification for testing.
