When you make an insurance claim, is it the norm to pay the vet and then claim back, or does the insurance company usually settle with the vet direct?

I have submitted my claim form and invoices to the insurance company for treatment over the last few weeks and asked them to settle direct (by ticking that option on the form) but am being hounded by my vet for payment. What should I do?

ETA: I have informed the vet that everything has been submitted to the insurance company.

The vets usually have a policy on when they like to be paid and can charge you interest if you don't pay monthly bills. I think my vets would have let me wait for the insurance claim but I opted to pay up front (because we get 10% discount for doing so) and claim back.

I suggest you ring your vets and talk to the person there that sorts the insurance claims out. Usually the vets need to complete part of the form themselves - did they not have to sign off on yours??

AshTray, the vet has completed his part of the insurance form and submitted it. My horse hasn't been "signed off" treatment yet.

my vets and PP talk to each other - i dont get hounded by the vets or insurance. pp are really great at settling up quickly even with on going medical problems

I'm with SEIB too (they've always been very good at paying out with my horses! :) )

They always pay my Vets direct and I think once they were late in settling the bill, so I just told the vets that the insurance were slow in paying, that I'd chase them up etc, I wrote a fairly to the point fax telling the insurers that unless they would like to pay interest it would be in their best interests to settle the bill asap- which they did straight away, you just have to keep insurers on their toes and get them to liaise with the Vets...

Hope you get it sorted out- it can be a headache dealing with all the paper work and insurance companies sometimes!

I paid the vet then the insurance paid out to me minus my excess. My vets are really helpful with this kind of thing, they sort out all the invoices realted to the claim, all I had to do was fill out the form and pass it on.

might be worth telling vets who you are insured with as SEIB have a good reputation and I know mine is more than happy to have them settle direct. Good job too as my bills used to be huge!

I've done it both ways. I was with Amtrust Equine a few years ago and they agreed my claim quickly then paid the vet within a couple of days of receiving each invoice. Subsequently I claimed from Equestrian Direct (EIS, or whatever their name is, and ended up dealing with the nightmarish Equine First..but that is a different story) who took months to approve the claim then months to pay out. In that case, my vet kept telling me not to pay them until I received my cheques from insurer but I felt bad keeping them waiting. In that case, I paid the vet directly out of my savings (it was about £3,000) and just kept on at my insurer until they paid me.

My vet gives you a form to sign so they can deal with the insurance company directly. The insurance company then send the payment cheque via me so I know they have paid it. Shearwater have been absolutely fab, had 3 very bad experiences with SEIB, including them trying to wiggle out of a tendon claim because 18 months (& a full endurance season earlier) I hcalled the vet once for a snotty nose (they say it may have affected her suspensory???!), then they took premiums for a policy I didn't have nor had signed for!
