Can someone please tell me why I have just been asked about my previous horses "vets" bills to insure a new horse? I have never claimed a penny, I do not even have my other horses covered for vets fees but they will not give me a quote for the new horse until i discuss every single "un routine" vet visit I have had within the last 3 years. Anyone out there know what this has to do with anything ?

Thats really weird. I'm with NFU too, and they have never asked me anything like that, I've added new horses to my policy too.

I dont see what difference it makes what you have claimed or spent on vet bills with another horse. I can understand them asking about treatment for the horse you are trying to cover to get exclusions etc but dont see why they would ask you about the costs for a completely different horse.

Very weird indeed..........

I have been with the NFU for years - but not no more - I have found the last 24 hours totally bizzare with them. I have just insured new boy for third party fire and theft with stoneways until I can sort out what on earth is going on

Very weird, I'm with NFU and have never been asked anything of the sort.
They only thing remotely related would be them asking what claims have been made on previous horses, but that is a pretty standard question.

I have no issue in telling anyone for anything I have claimed for (which is a big fat ZERO) but they refused to even continue my application until i had discussed every single "un routine" vet visit for the last three years. They also wanted to know if I knew of anyone whom had claimed loss of use ??????? Why?

They have also asked me specifically if hoss has wobblers or narclapsye. oh yeah like i would buy if it did !!. NFU

I work for NFU Mutual and we do now have to ask those two questions along with a few others. But we do not need to know about routine vets stuff!

May I ask which office this was?

Gingerwitch, we had exactly the same problem when trying to insure our mare recently with them. They wanted to know whether my mother had made any claims in the last 3 years and how much it was for and what it was for regardless of which insurance company we had used at the time. They seem to be really tightening up. My mum has cancelled her 3 policies and i've just cancelled my 3 too after discovering that my 4 year olds premiums have gone up 50% despite never having claimed for anything with her. It all starts to get rather expensive and ridiculous. So im saving my money now and only insuring for 3rd party. I think alot of people are going to be shocked when they try to either claim or receive their renewals this year!

I got so fed up with this aspect of insurance that I am 'self-insuring' now - putting money aside each month.
That way, I have no exclusions, can't argue or delay payment to myself!

Not to be a pain but have you thought about what would happen in respect to public liability claim? We have one running at the moment for a dosile horse that kicked a car out hacking and it currently running at £15k!

Sorry if that seems rude but what would you do if someone tried to sue you because of something your horse did?

It's not rude - it's a good point.
I am a gold member of the BHS who provide:

"Personal Liability Insurance Cover for all the horses you own, look after and ride regardless of age. Up to £10 million for any one claim and no excess on claims and cover when riding someone else’s horse with their permission. "

I think insurance companies are tightening up, what with the credit crunch and all that, and trying to get away with whatever possible to cut down their costs...thats my opinion based on a nightmare I'm still going through with my old company...

I am going to insure myself with the BHS tomorrow and cancel all my NFU stuff. I still cannot see why they want to know the details of a cut to my horses leg 2 years ago, and a course of antibiotics for a snotty nose earlier this year for the other one. What are they trying to prove that my new horse will be contaiminated by these events, or do the insurance companies want us to stop using vets, and go back to the old "boiled nettle" and dose it with a can of coke and 24 asprins for colic.
