just wondering what insurance company every one finds the best to use!! Ours have put our premiums up on our new horse as we claimed once for him when he went lame with bruised soles and cause we claimed when we lost my first horse to grass sickness just under a year ago! also have said that we will have to pay half of each vet bills!

As Amy said, good grief!

I think I would be changing my vet very quickly after that episode; they obviously have their pockets and not your horse (or your) best interests at heart. At the very least they could have suggested getting your farrier to have a look after the first visit which should have been job sorted.
It's easy in hindsight but most agree that at least 90% of lamenesses originate with the foot so if you can't see or feel anything wrong in the leg (you can usually tell whether the injury is higher up the leg or not by their action) then it's always worth having your farrier out first because they ARE the hoof specialists.

i did!!! i have since changed farrior cause he told me nothing wrong with his fet and though he looked wrong all over!!! not really what you want to hear about your new horse! the nerve blocks showed the lamness in his foot which is why bruised sole was diagnosed i think!

As mentioned maybe the best person to ask for opinions is the vet. I work for an insurance company so obviously can't advertise myself but so far noone's slagged us off on here so we can't be that bad! ha ha

Maybe try an insurance broker, see what they can find you. i think you will find though most insurance companies have increased their premiums this year. You don't say who you are with now but have you tried seeing if they will reduce the premium? You may find it's just gone up by a standard % unless they told you why it'd gone up. Unfortunately if you do make a few claims in a few years then it is likely your premium will go up due to the loss ratio on your policy I'm afraid. Still it's always worth a try ringing round other companies. I haven't heard any bad reports about SEIB but you are likely to find their premiums will have increased (I presume you mean south essex ins or do you mean scottish equestrian?).

Anyway, have a look round, as far as I know there's only one company you should avoid and without saying their name it'll be the one who offers you the cheapest premium! Don't take it or ask your vet first and see what they say - I think it'll be "don't go there!"

SEIB have been totally brilliant for me. I've had two big vets fees claims (surgery for both) they've paid up quickly, and the premiums have not increased. Also, they are very good about exclusions - they only exclude the exact problem that has been treated, not like some companies which seem to exclude all four legs at the drop of a hat. I can't say anything bad about them.

i work at a vets and a lot of my time is used doing insurance claims, filling them in etc, talking to the claim departments/resolving any queries the companies have over the claims and from the vets side i would recommend NFU,Petplan,Seib as being the best, their not always the cheapest but my god the thousands of pounds they've paid up without even questioning is i think very good.

I've just done loads of shopping around for quotes and eventually signed up with E&L because I could actually understand their site and the premium was good - they even include hunting in the lowest bracket. I hope I never have to claim but would be interested in hearing if anyone else is with them and how they perform should you have to claim? Thanks.

There is a reason they are cheap!!!

It doesn't really matter how cheap they are if they don't pay out or you have to fight to get your claim through. Think you'll find there are few people on here who would recommend them as an insurance company.

Most vets also want owners to garentee payment if claim is going through them (which I think says it all really). Goes back to the cheapest not always being the best option!!!!
