got my renewal from the NFU today and learnt that the cover has changed:

"cover for your horse no longer has specific exclusions. instead there is a general exclusion that means your animal will not be covered for any condition it has suffered prior to this renewal, even if you have not made a claim"

I've contacted them, and waiting to hear if this also includes conditions with excesses.

not terribly impressed and unconvinced continuing to insure with the NFU is going to offer me value for money.

can anyone recommend an insurer that offers more comprehensive cover. horse is 14

Thanks

Try Petplan. They've given me a long list of exclusions and are very specific. They've also indicated which ones they are prepared to remove once he goes 12months clear.

Yours seem to be very general and you won't know what you are actually covered for. I mean does this cover a foot that may have had an abscess for instance?

my understanding is that it excludes anything that has required veterinary treatment.

horse does have an excess for brushing injuries (on vetting 7 years ago), so does this mean any field leg injury will be excluded?

off to ckeck out petplan

I'm with Pet Plan and have had several large claims (£10K plus) with the current horse as he chipped his choulder as a baby and 2 years later dislocated a stifle.

He has a list of very specific exclusions which are only concerned with the 2 previous claims. I can claim for anything else as long as the vet will say they are connected to the original injurys.

I am insured with NFU and they have paid out for lameness in the same hind leg twice for me as it was a different cause, they have never quibbled over any claim I have put in for, I find them very helpful and always pay up in a short space of time. Im sure if you contact them to discuss this you may find that you are covered for a lot more than you previously thought. Most insurance companies stop insuring a certain leg once they have had a lameness claim on it!!!
