Insurance for 16 yr old horse

I believe scottish equestrian will insure a horse up to 20yrs old IF it's been insured with them from 16 yrs???? Worth a call, but they only insure for upto £3500 vets fees, not 5K.

A lot of insurers will cover a horse until 20/25 if they have been insured with them prior to their 16th year. But be warned, when I bought a 16 yo that had been insured with NFU without a single claim for 8 years they insisted on issuing a new policy (despite saying that they would continue his policy on the phone!) which meant that he only had accident cover.....which cost £50 MORE than my 12 yo's policy despite having little or no benefits by comparison.

A year or so later Petplan Equine launched their policy that gave full VF cover for any horse insured before they were 20 (cover continues until they are 25) so I covered my then approaching 18 yo gelding who within 6 weeks of buying the policy damaged a tendon - they paid out with no problems to nearly the £5k limit until he was retired. Can't praise them enough:D

thanks all for the info - will ring round these tomorrow

hope petplan isn't the only option - they're always the most expensive!
