A girl I know has a horse she rides and has now decided she would quite like to drive him as he is also broken to harness. The said horse is not insured in any way nor is the girl. She has been advised by the Police

that she does not need insurance should she decide to start driving her horse on the roads.

I think that she should but after this information I'm wondering who is in the right? As we now live in a claim happy environment I feel she is leaving herself wide open to would be claimers from every angle, be it a scratched car or god forbid a serious accident.

Any advice??????

Whilst it may not be legal requirement to have insurance for driving horses it would be madness not to - as you say she could leave herself wide open to some very big bills! what happens if she causes an accident, horses have hoolley (spelling ?) and crash into a car, potential third party claim against her etc. Even if they just had a silly accident that wrecked her trap/carriage and nothing else, if it isn't insured how would she replace it. I think you need to strongly suggest she phones various insurance companies for advice - even if it's just to get liability cover it's got to be worth it.

I've already advised her of all of this, what I'm amazed at is that the Police would give out such rubbish advice. While it may not be law surely they would strongly advise to insure?

I know YO has informed her that she is not permitted to take her horse from his yard with trap unless she has insurance. Maybe he thinks should there be an accident it would come back to him and his insurance?

But for a mere £120 she can can the horse insured, madness really

I asked her what would happen if she was invloved in an accident which was her fault and then sued by a third party. She then asked me how they would sue her as she owns nothing........
enough said.....

I wouldn't drive any of my animals on the road without insurance. If your friend joins the BDS they will Insure her horse for driving at I think £40 per year and it gives either £3million or £5 million Third party Cover. (best check my figures as I am not sure what they are, OH deals with it)
