Hi there, I'm looking to set up as a freelance groom. I've looked on the BGA and BHS website and they both offer insurance by becoming a member. Was wandering if anyone can help me with which insurance is best. The BHS offer public liability and personal accident which is what I thought I'd need but not sure if I will need anything more comprehensive??? Any help appreciated xxx

Yes you will need more than BHS insurance - you will basically want to be insured for everything. I am a freelance groom and I am insured with SEIB. It's not cheap but clients are reassured about employing me knowing that I am fully ensured. Have a look on here for more information: http://www.seib.co.uk/

Hope this helped. :)

Thats who I'm insured by too.

The thing BHS miss is the care, custordy and control thing. I think thats what its called anyway. Basically that covers you if a horse gets ill or injured under your care which as a freelance groom is very important.

Unfortunately so!

I think I paid around £430 for mine....steep but I was very glad I had it when I had an accident involving a tractor on a client's horse and the horse bolted and fell on me on the road. Luckily horse was fine but it did hit home that insurance is a MUST as it could of been a lot worse..

Another one for SEIB here. I am also a member of the BGA and 90% of my clients have come from advertising on there. I take the personal accident through the BGA membership with SEIB :)

Sorry, too lazy to go and look, but doesn't BHS Gold Membership exclude commercial activities? I am a (hobby) breeder and have extra insurance through the CLA as I suspect the BHS doesn't cover me. I assume I need Employers Liability anyway as I occasionally have voluntary helpers. I'd rather be over insured than find out I'm under insured the hard way!

If you are qualified, the BHS register of grooms offers insurance including CCC etc.
The standard personal accident insurance offered by The BHS on all of their instructor/groom/membership policies is minimal and needs topping up if you want a good policy. They do offer a top up option through SEIB.
If not, BGA is the way to go most likely.
