We were talking to our YO before about having a one-off fun show at the farm - they have hundreds of acres, plenty of potential car park space, etc, so it would be ideal.

However, where would the YO stand legally? What insurance would be required, if any? Or would signing a disclaimer before entry be enough? There's a yard nearby that does nothing insurance-wise when they have a show, but i don't know if that's right or not. YO asked me to find out more for him, so i was wondering if any of you could help?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

hi
when we did a one off fun show back in 2004 we got insurance via NFU - we also had the standard disclaimer in the schedule - i must say - 2004 was thevery wet summer and we had rain leading up to the event - we called to ask if the insurance would be ok if we needed to maybe move one ring into the indoor should it be raining - it cost us extra on the off chance we would have to move inside (we never moved inside) its cost a few hundred pounds just for the day - not sure if there is a way around getting insurance etc - but in todays sue everyone society we thought it worth having!

ps - hope you get it sorted and have a fun show!!!

Yes you need event cover as any policy for the yard will not have this, even if all the participants signed disclaimers you would need cover as disclaimers will not relieve you of liability.
The NFU will talk you though it, but you need cover for participants and volunteer helpers, as well as any equipment you may hire in. Other potential costs are hiring in showjumps and arena ropes, toilets and rosettes, as well as lunches and other ancillaries.
You will need to do a health and safety check, so it is as well to plan the layout in advance to prevent horses and spectators separate.
