I plan to go travelling and like the idea of working at a ranch/stable in the Americas. As a result, I've started helping someone with their horses.

Cut things short, another owner at the yard, told my friend, that it would be best for me to get insurance while working/being around her horses.

Can anyone tell me what insurance I would need and any recommendations?

Some rider insurance and third party liability. Though I'd check with an Americas specialist and insurance in the states is big business and needs to be absolutely iron clad as suing/making claims against others is much more common than in the UK for example. (I speak from some experience having these insurances for myself as a helper in the UK, and through work organising insurance for the business (not horse related!)).

Normally I would suggest PC/RC or BHS. But LHIS is absolutely correct - you need something specific for America. The UK based insurers almost certainly won't extend their cover to another jurisdiction.

Okay. I don't need insurance yet in America/Canada. Only need insurance while helping out in the UK.
My worry is that I'm not currently ridding (starting march ish) but what insurance would cover me for being around with the horses.

Oh sorry - misunderstood!

Which insurance you go for depends on what you want to insure against.

If you want to insure against loss of salary etc if you are injured you will need a rider type policy with accident insurance. PetPlan are probably the best known for that - but there are others.

If you want to insure yourself against you making a mistake and getting sued from it then you need third party liability insurance. You get that as part of your membership from Pony Club and the BHS. You can also get it if you make a regular donation to World Horse Welfare. I don't think you can buy third party liability alone - but personally I'd opt for membership or donation. another party as well as the insurers benefits!
