Those of you with Labs, would you mind telling me who you insure with, if you are happy with company and approximate monthly price of premium.

I have just had my renewal through from direct line for my fit, healthy, slim, castrated, 3yo black lab and it is getting beyond a joke.

Premium has gone from £11 to £26.50 per month in the 3 years. The excess has gone from £90 to £160 per incident.

It costs more to insure my dog than it does my 5yo potential event horse that has been out BE this summer

So might do a bit of shopping around, or alternatively might just self-insure for vets fees! Can you get just PL insurance for dogs?
 
Just be aware - if you change policy that anything the dog has been seen by a vet for before will be excluded (even down to being seen for a cough, diarrhoea etc) for at least 12 months, and the exclusion can only be removed if you beg & grovel!
If he's never ever ever been seen for anything other than booster vacs then would suggest you consider:
Petplan (no quibbles) but not their petvalue policy
Pet protect
More Than (very good)
Sainsbury's seem to pay out very well though with limited cover
Tesco - cheap & cheerful, limited cover but usually no real quibbles
Direct Line are good though they do moan about sometimes
AVOID:
Cam't tell you for legal reasons - PM me & I'll tell you! But the usual suspects (think equine isurance!)

For PL only, NFU are pretty good on their 'working dog' policy but don't know about costs.
 
I have Pops insured with NFU - I get a discount because Be is insured with them too, and they are doing special low premiums next year

I have both my scruffy mongrels insured with Tesco. They were with Sainsburys but they shot up threefold without any claims. I pay less for the two that I was paying for one with Sainsburys. My vets fees are 10k which is a bit bizarre as my horses insurance has 5k vets fees.
 
Our lab is insured with Tesco along with the whippet, we get a discount for insuring two with them, whole premium per month is only £15 for both, however I dont think the payouts are as large as More Than.

It is well worth trying to bargain with some of these companies, another one is NFU....good for labs that go eating everything!!
 
I have both my labs (1 x 8 month old entire male and 1 x 4 year old entire male) insured with direct line. I had this problem when I went to inusre my puppy with them and the premium was about £40 per month. I called them and they got it down to £14 per month.................................... for both of them so definatly worth a call!!!
