Hi, just wondering if anyone can help, i've looked on insurance websites but there's not much info.

How do you go about insuring an in-foal mare? do you just pay extra on top of your normal insurance, and what exactly will it cover you for? My mare is currently insured with nfu mutual and has been since we bought her seven years ago, vet is coming out on thursday to check her over and fingers crossed she will be going for AI later ths month/early may.
We only own one horse and she is not currently a broodmare, this will be her and our first foal if all goes to plan! Thanks :)

My mare was insured with NFU and when she was confirmed in-foal I asked them about foaling insurance. It cost me an extra £75 as a one-off fee (this was 4 years ago) and she was covered for any vet's fees allied to being in-foal and the the foaling itself plus it covered the foal up the age of 30 days when she (the foal) could then be insured in her own right. Fortunately I didn't have any foaling complications but given all the other costs, I thought £75 was a bargain.

Like you, at the time she was my only horseand my first foal.

My mare is with NFU and when I got a quote last year it was so astronomical I decided I wouldn't bother and keep my fingers crossed. I'd give them a ring, they are very helpful.

i insured mare in foal with NFU (foal is now 10 mths) it was about £70 but it does depend on covering fee i think. At the time i though it was as FaithKat said but spoke to the local office since and they were very vague about what it actually covered. Luckily no complications so wasnt an issue but i would advise getting what it covers in writing.
The £70 was a one off payment on top of my current insurance for mare.

I think when I asked it only covered the stud fee, so I decided it wasn't worth while as I have a no live foal free return anyway.

I insure with KBIS on their general horse policy which includes loss by foaling. It doesn't cover your stud veterinary costs or loss of stud fee, nothing like that but at least I have peace of mind that they are covered for foaling. THey do, I think have a special bloodstock policy which might cover you better but if I remember rightly, the costs far outweighed the benefits. Most companies will only insure a foal from 30 days old on a normal policy but you can get special foal insurance, again, this is pretty astronomical.
Best thing is to ring around the main companies and compare.

I am with NFU & when I queried with them they quoted about £70 for cover but when I re-enquired nearer time they double checked & confirmed this would only cover stud fee if anything happened to foal prior to or during birth. Apparently foal itself would not be covered for vet fees until could be added as additional cover from 30 days old. As mare covered for vet fees they advised any complications to mare would be covered anyway.
Would double check details carefully before you take any cover out as telephone advisors are encouraged to sell add-ons to policies but may not always have correct facts

Hi, my mare is insured with Scottish Equestrian, I phoned them to confirm her pregnancy and they informed me that she is automatically covered under my existing policy, which is a usual riding horse policy, for anything other than routine, it also covers for emergencies/problems during the actual foaling, but the foal is not covered for the first 30 days.

Thankyou all for you replies - sorry I didn't respond sooner but we had a few timing issues however my mare has now been scanned in foal and she took first time! Have spoken to insurance company and don't need to do anything until it comes up for renewal in august so fingers crossed we still have a foalie inside by then!
