Can anyone recommend an insurer that covers multiple horses? Or what do owners of more than one do, insure or self insure? I'm having a dilemma!

To date I've used KBIS who were excellent when I lost my horse in a road accident. However if I covered all 4 with them it'd be at least £150 a month. I always insure them all for liability as standard - but at the moment I have 2 'keepers' and 2 in for sale, and will usually have at least 4 at any one time. I'm not really worried about insuring for value, just vet fees. Is there an insurer who will cover a group of horses?

Someone I spoke to said she puts away a certain amount each month for 'emergencies' and has a credit card on standby, but I wonder how realistic this is?

Bearing in mind none of my horses are world beaters and are mostly hacking, dressage, showing and a bit of unaff jumping. I do have one due to event next year and will definitely insure him fully then.

Any thoughts/experiences welcome!

I have mine with Petplan... 3+ horses and you get a discount. Never had a problem with them and they were really quick and sensitive when I lost my boy last summer...

I have several thousand pounds in savings for vet bills - I found vet insurance to be a waste of time, especially if a repetitive illness or injury comes along

I do public liability insurance with BHS - their Gold service. Insures ALL your horses (regardless of number) for just over 60 quid a year. Hugely worthwhile.

Ah very useful to know, think I'll get that! Thanks

This - I have BHS Gold... and keep 5k in a bank account just in case... I'm quite hardened now - No horse of mine would have colic surgery - nor would I 'manage' a horse with laminitis... having seen numerous horses suffer being 'managed' before... so I guess I don't see the point in paying over 250 a month for vet insurance for my brood.

I insure all my with KBIS for death only except for the one that is starting eventing who has vet cover but I have PL with BHS Gold membership which saves a lot. Like someone else, I'm very realistic and won't do surgery/lifetime medication but I do have a credit card to cover emergencies; I'm also incredibly lucky to have a vet as a best friend which saves me an absolute fortune.
