What's the maximum age a horse can be to still get insurance (cover for potential vet fees more imporant than value/loss of use). Is it 10 or 15 years old? Thanks in advance.
Petplan offer the best Veteran policy there is. If you insure your horse with them before their 20th you receive full cover up to their 25th birthday. My 29 yo is with them and they have always paid out etc - although he is now only accidental external injury as he is wonderfully ancient - still a complete fruit mind, my foot bl**dy hurts from where he jumped on me today while poo picking
I almost bought an older horse (but he failed the vet). Off the top of my head - NFU said veteren insurance starts at 16. If you take it out before 16 then you get normal insurance up to the age of 20. I think t was Shearwater that starts veteren insurance 1t 18. There are lots of options for older horses these days. Petplan gave me a quote as they were very good as DinkyDen says, but it was very expensive - £400 more than NFU for the same cover.
Insurance I'm with (Carriage House) say they're veterans at 16. I had mine insured with them before he became a veran. We now pay something like £150 P.A (was about a hundred more before he became "Old" and that was minus a bit from 3 years no claims), the vets fees are now about £2.5 (I think, it may be 2k) but he's not insured for degenerative diseases like Chushings, Navicular etc
wow hollycat, thats surprising, NFU have always been more expensive than petplan when i've looked - how bizrre, 400 is a lot! i only pay £10/month for my old boy!!!
I have just insured my 28 year old with Pet Plan and its costing me £9.82 a month for vet fees up to £1000 per incident for accidental injury and to the value of £1000 for death by injury only, it includes 3rd party liability and personal accident and £200 disposal costs (that's an awful way to put it but...),
I thought that was really good value plus I got a free Amigo Bug Rug for taking out the policy.
