Insurance for older horses?

This is more of an "I'm curious" question ATM but just wondering about insurance for older horses...

Have just found out that the horse I have on loan, which I was told was 11, is actually 14. Partly my fault as I only looked at the vaccination record bit of his passport when I got it (about 2 months after getting the horse) otherwise I'd have realised, but now means I have to ring my insurers in the morning to tell them he's older than I thought he was when I took out the policy (I took out the policy as soon as I got him).

But it got me wondering about insurance for "older" horses. Assuming that things go to plan and I keep hold of the new boy for a good few years, in a couple of years or so I assume I won't be able to have "standard" insurance for him. Those of you who have older horses, ie 16+, insured, is there much that your insurers won't cover now the horse is older? Did you find it difficult to get reasonably priced and sensible insurance polices for your older ponies?
 
When I had my old boy he was insured with petplan and they offer continued full insurance for the older horse up to X age as long as it is insured with them before a certain age. I can't remember the details but worth looking into. I have the younger boys insured with NFU so not really looked into how they cover the older horse.
 
Thanks. I'll look into it next year when the policy is up for renewal (assuming current insurers, Equestrian Direct, don't have a paddy when I ring them tomorrow and change his age on the policy, then refuse to insure me anymore or something like that!). I've never used NFU or Petplan, been with Equestrian Direct for years. I will ask them in the morning actually if they offer anything like NFU/Petplan do, as I've had all my horses and the trailer with them pretty much since I've had horses.
