A friend of mine is just going to start sharing a horse

Owner has insurance for him but my friend is wondering if she needs insurance cover and if so what kind of policy

I was thinking definitely third party cover

When I had a sharer I told her to have BHS Gold as a minimum so my horse was covered with third party liability with her.
It depends on what she wants to be insured for - in case she has an accident and severe injury? Damage to other people's property etc?

Rider insurance or BHS cover would probably be best as obviously you can not insure the same horse twice so it would need to be personal accident cover only.

Good third party for your horse will typically cover your sharer, and anyone handling him in an non professional capacity. Worth reading your small print / emailing your insurer. My third party through BD has always covered all my horses, including horses I had on loan (that were in my care) and covered horses when handled by sharers or friends.

But worth discussing that sharer would be liable for the excess, which is typically about £300-500 for third party claims, I think if involved in an accident.

I had my sharers sign a disclaimer that were riding fit, competition horses that could be highly strung and unpredictable, and were riding at their own risk. And that I strongly recommended they took out their own personal accident insurance, as my insurance would not cover them for personal injury.

I didnt then make them take out personal accident cover, I recommended it but didnt mandate it. Some of my sharers took out personal accident and some didnt.

Personally I think equestrian personal accident cover is very limited in the cover actually provided.

Third party on the other hand, anybody with a horse would be insane not to have third party cover.
