I know probably a boring post but insurance is coming up for renewal (sp) so want to look around for quotes. Am currently with Petplan for both of my horses.
Who else would be good to get quotes from and who to avoid?
Would it be better to have them both insured with the same people? One is 17yrs old and the other 3yrs old.

Thanks in advance. :)

hi. i have 2 same age. after many quotes i've decided to go with NFU, personal liab only and going to put away £ for any incurring vets fees (touch wood!)

was considering pet plan... did a quote online and they sent me 2 letters and 2 emails about it... desperation?! But have heard 4 bad reports on them now via friends about paying out and they were cheapest either. my nfu office is very local to me so going to go for that i think!

i have my older horse (14) with pet plan - as they cover them fully till 25

the youngester (2) with NFU

I did shop around NFU came out tops for the youngster (and fantastic to deal with) pet plan slightly more but was swung by the extra vets cover.

Not had to claim from either yet thankgod - but was with a company who are notoreious (sp?) for years and am a master at arguing now!

I always insured with NFU before I got my last horse - TBH I was getting a bit peeved with them as premiums were rising a lot, despite no claims and when that horse went on loan they gave me incorrect information over the phone about transferring the responsibility for premiums to the loaner and a few other things.

When I got my new boy who was 16 they, despite what they said on the phone (he had been insured with them by his previous owner for 10 years, I had the policy number etc) when it came to insuring him they would only put him on their veteran policy which still cost £100 a year more than my other horses full cover - over £500 pa for a fraction of the cover. BTW, I also had a 5 stage vetting cert! So I swore I would never use them again for anything :(

My haffie was on a veteran policy only for a year or two, all that was available for him until last year when I saw the ads for PetPlan covering horses for full vets fees until 25 yo as long as they were insured by age 20 so I bought a policy for a now 18 yo pony which was actually quite a bit cheaper (£348) than the last NFU policy for my then 12 yo Section D (£443 iirc).

I was really worried when the pony went lame in the field 6 weeks later - I was convinced that they wouldn't pay out especially as the lameness was unexplained, despite lots of tests until a scan 3 months later but they were as good as gold and paid up without complaint - nearly £4k so far and been very clear and helpful anytime I'd had to talk to them......my vets have also been very happy as they pay very quickly after a claim form goes in!

No other connection with them except as a very happy and relieved customer :)

We went with Petplan because of the extended cover for veterans, our girl was 17 when we got her.

Not had to claim on the horse, but our labrador was in and out of the vets almost as soon as we got her as a puppy. Petplan have always paid out without any problems - so picking them for the horse was not difficult - we feel we can rely on them. Plus there was a discount for having a 2nd policy with them.

Mine (oldies and pony) are with NFU as they were the cheapest but only covered third party fire and theft LOL!

My other mare is with SEIB. I think they are quite expensive but her history probably dictates I remain with them! LOL!
