Hi,

Just wondered if some info I heard is right.

My horse has had ongoing respiration probs and has been under going medical help for 6 months at Leahurst and with local vet. someone told me yesterday that the insurance company usually disqualify you from further claims for the same prob after you renew your insurance at the end of the year. even if you stay with the same comapny.

I'm with NFU. is this true in your experiences.

Getting very worried as this prob seems to be going on and on and my boy is back to Leahurst on the 1st March for further checks.

It could well go on over a year. In fact, it feels like it will never end as he is still puffing like a steam train after light work.

I think you should be ok if it is still the same problem being treated and treatment hasnt stopped. But you need to contact the NFU to check.

I am also with NFU and i think you are correct.

I was told they will pay out for the first year, up to £5k in my case, but that after the first year is up he will be excluded for that condition (arthritis in one fetlock)even if the treatment has not finished!!

Considering he has been having IRAP therapy (at at least £1k a go not including the extras) I am not really looking forward to next year!!

I am not sure if he will be covered for any other arthritic changes or just not for that leg, but there you go.

They (ins co) give you an umbrella and then when it rains they want it back!!

BAS***DS

If thats the case, what a rip off!! I dont think they should be able to do that. If a small animal gets ill, insurance companies will pay for medication for life. I think if the horse ahs been dignosed with something whilst you are insured then the insurance company should continue to pay, if only to an agreed maximum at least for the following year. My opinion!!

And adding vets bill insurance to a policy costs the earth!

I'm with PP and my girl had her back x-rayed in March 2004, the policy was renewed in May and it was excluded from then so it didn't cover some of her follow up appointments. Grrrr. Its still excluded now so assume its a life exclusion. The only reason I keep the policy on now is on the off chance she might need some sort of sugery at some point in her life - not that I'm trying to tempt fate.

My mare had a colic operation which insurance paid out for and they paid out for any claims I made on after care as but once twelve months were up a I got a new policy note which excluded colic,

you usually get 12months from the first date the problem occured, regardless of renewal date.

Hope you've rung NFU already though as you also have to tell them withing 14 days of any problem.

NFU have been really good in general so I'm sure you will be fine, your vets should also be aware of this so should be timing treatment accordingly.

Hi having had MANY dealings with exclusions on policies

insurance companies will pay the first £5000 for each condition or will pay the bills for 1 year only depending on which comes first... the year or the money running out. They will then put an exclusion on your policy so you cant claim for the same condition again.

I just rang a couple of people I've got quotes out with at the moment and they are that it's £5000 or 12 months - whichever is first. They did say though that for some conditions if you've been trouble free for a year they will agree to cover that condition again - although you may have to ask to get the exclusion lifted.

It always amazes me the number of gripes people post on the forum regarding exclusions and terms of cover. It seems to me that there are an awful lot of people who are taking out insurance, paying their premiums and not bothering to read their policies terms and conditions! Insurances companies are out there to make a profit, not to supply the horsey equivalent of the NHS!

I dont think anyone expects that, but i have private health care which i also pay lots for and if i stay with the company and i then develop a prob, which i did, they don't say sorry, i won't cover you now the year is over

Because it occured while in cover and was not a pre exsisting condition. That's

life and it is covered. I think it is fair to expect the same from our horse insurance. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
