Ugh, ugh ugh.

If not being able to get off the yard due to the ice / snow wasn't bad enough i've just had an update from my insurance company.

Back in October I had my car stolen (broke into the house to get the keys), whilst very annoying i thought it wasn't too bad as everything was insured... oh how naive of me! Having been the first time having to claim on any insurance I under estimated how irritating it was going to be.
First nightmare was realising that my brand new Jefferies bridle was in the boot of the car - along with various other horsey items, which normally live at the yard and only come home for cleaning. (Force of habit leaving it in the boot of the car as then OH (now ex - but thats a whole other rant) was extremely allergic to horses).

Any way car eventually recovered thanks to a tracker but unfortunately all horsey items (except one chap - thanks what am I going to do with that??) gone. Again thought not to worry as had to claim on house insurance as they stolen items from the house.

This brings me on to the insurance company. Have an "all cases / clause's" policy meant to cover personal belongings etc in the house car and away from home, theft, accidental damage does include a sporting equipment clause - lists golf clubs, snow boards, and when your covered and not, Ie hit a tree with the golf club not covered, drop the bag down a flight of stairs you are. etc etc.
Basically the daddy of all insurance policies.

To now be told that equestrian equipment for me is covered but not for the horse.....
As it's not a personal belonging..... SO WHO OWNS IT?? MY HORSE??

Managed to convince them that the brushing boots and over reach boots are for me and not the horse

Slightly annoyed as I did specifically ask them about if my Tack was covered at the yard (away from home bit) and they gave me the requirements for it to be covered.... type of locks and could it be seen etc. Funny they don't seem to have a record of me asking that. But slightly worrying as if my tack was anywhere in the house, car, yard, by their current definition I wouldn't be covered.

So just a warning to you all, might be worth a quick double check of your policies. I've not given up but considering it's 3 months later (obviously had to shell out for a replacement a while ago!) I'm not holding my breath.

Bring on the NY!

I know most "horse" insurance will cover although, when i last looked they didn't seem to cover accidental damage and seemed loads more expensive, which is why I just opted for extensive house insurance. As I say lesson learnt ! :-(

Ditto what Ship said. My tack is covered in my car if out of sight on my horse insurance (Petplan). It is not covered however in most tackrooms if you read the smallpring regarding bars on window and type of locks on doors.

MY horse insurance covers my tack in the car as long as out of sight in the boot

along with with "hidden" small print policy. times are hard for everyone but seems, more so for Insurance companies when it comes to paying out....

insurance is just not even remotely worth getting anymore. The premiums too high, everything is excluded or they find a hidden reason or clause to worm their way out. Then there's cost of excess.

If it was cheaper then maybe, but the cost of the premiums - it's too much of a small risk that you might, one day, be one of the lucky few to get a tiny bit back. Just get a high interest savings account and pay into the same as what you pay insurance - AND you can use ALL the saved up money to pay for vet fees etc - without excluding stabling and bandages and excess etcetc.

It is always worth fighting if you can put up with it - I am sure they rely on people running out of enthusiasm and giving up

I always keep my tack at home but happened to leave 2 saddles at the livery yard one night - we were broken into and every thing was stolen. One of my saddles was hand made to fit me and my horse (me 5ft - horse 18hh!!!) and I never could replace it. As the saddles were individually listed on my house insurance I assumed as the rest of the criteria was met that I would get some compensation. However the "small print" excluded saddlery!! This was probably an agents error - either way it wasn't mine!?

I fought (and fought) and won so it is definately worth standing your ground if you can

have you thought about insuring your house with the NFU?
all my saddles are individually insured as they are over £600 (dont know why the NFU have this amount quoted for any one specific item) my bridles are also insured but arent specifically named (as in make, size etc) any other item if under or over the £600 is insured.
worth thinking about, and it was much cheaper than our previous household insurance when they didnt insure the tack - plus its made my horse policy much cheaper lol
