As title really, I'm desperate for some insurance for my new shelter. I've tried NFU who dont want to know as i dont have any other insurance with them, they said to put it on my home insurance but I'v rang Halifax and apart from being an Indian call centre who wouldnt have a clue what I was talking about they said as the field isnt with my home (its about a mile away) that i couldnt add it on my house insurance. The only people ive managed to get a quote off is Scottish Equestrian Insurance services but they wanted over £200 premium and £500 excess which i think is a bit excessive.

I've just had mine built this winter and it didn't even cross my mind to get insurance and thinking about it now, I probably should! It wasn't cheap!
I'll keep an eye on your post - could you say if you get anywhere and i'll do the same :-)

I have the same dilema. My field shelter is in a friends field where I livery. My house hold insurance will not cover it. I have my horse medical insurance with NFU, they will not insure it unless I move my house insurance to them. Therefore it is currently uninsured. I get the jitters when it is stormy!

I have same problem, NFU will not insure yard/stables/shelters etc unless I transfer my house insurance to them - increasing the current premium by just over 318% from what I am paying now (and thats JUST the house buildings insurance!)
Its a bog std house, not in any flood or criminal areas & no 'issues'.

Used to insure with them (just the yard etc & not house) but that was over 12 yrs ago.

Was told to try South Essex, have called twice & am promised a return call...... still waiting...they obviously don't want to quote for new business

Hmm I hope they don't try anything funny with the premiums this year. I moved my house insurance to them last year because even including the cover on the field the premium with them was 25% lower than my previous insurer.

Give horsebox-insurance.co.uk a try or call 0800 975 6771. They are really nice and very helpful.

They don't just do horsebox insurance btw! I know they cover farms and yards etc. etc. so I'm sure they'll be able to help. They've always been really prompt at getting back to me in the past and are really well priced.

On the farming forums a lot of farmers seem peed off with NFU (esp re premiums) and have moved to Farmers and Mercentile.

I dont know if they cover horsey stuff but it might be worth a call. I havent got insurance with them and dont work for them but the forum feedback was positive, they might only do big farms tho.

Brilliant, just been onto them earlier this morning & their broker has already just called back, so great customer service
Looking likely that a 'Smallholders' silver policy would suit - covering buildings replacement & also deadstock (hay/bedding/feed) that is stored as well as 3rd party liability etc. Not a bad price as Surrey goes either, compares well with the NFU price I got 8 yrs ago last time I had the yard insured!

Thanks v much lachlanandmarcus :)

Oh hurrah Im really pleased!! wasnt sure how wide they went from straight farming. Forum comments by farmers on them paying out on claims has been ok too, though we all take forum comments at whatever value it's better than no info at all to make decisions on!

Now I just need to get round to doing insurance for my own place....!!
:-O))

this is what can happen when mobile field shelters become EXTREMELY mobile in strong winds.....

Just got the paperwork through.
All seems ok, tho I need to contact them as it specifically does not cover for livery except self DIY (I imagine that is for someone who is renting a field & needs the cover).
I dont have liveries any more, have sworn blind I'll never have them again... but, I just cannot rule it out in the future.... :o

Also states mobile field shelters MUST be ground anchored....this would be damned difficult with my heavy one on metal skids, which can only be moved with tractor & is not designed to be anchored. Its stood up to v high winds when we moved it at end of Nov & farmer left it facing the main wind direction!!!! Never moved at all & no damage done.

mnmnm - not a nice sight!

Ours is a heavy one on solid metal skids too! It wasn't ground anchored and had possibly a little too much roof overhang on the back. However, once we got the metal skids base down from wher it was perched 8ft up a tree across the lane, it was a pretty simple job to rebuild it. Only needed 3 8x4ft ply panels for the back wall and 2 roof sheets and is as good as new

We have home insurance with NFU and also field liability, they added the field shelter to this policy. Thank goodness - spent over £1000 on a field shelter and the storms this winter totally destroyed it (even after staking it down - Cornish weather...).
