What are peoples opinion on insurance on a young foal?

I have put a deposit down on ID filly in Ireland and the breeder has only had a couple people put insurance on her foals before.

This is my first foal so unsure of what the right approach is.

It depends on the terms. When I buy foals from Ireland it’s usually a small deposit and if anything happens to the foal then you don’t pay any more ad you don’t own the foal until the balance is paid. So no point in insurance.

With higher value and uk studs, you might own and be liable for the foal from the date of deposit, in which case insurance for death or theft at least is sensible.

Congratulations on your foal!

Same situation here, first foal from Ireland. I’ve paid a deposit and will settle the balance on transport.
P.S. I think our babies are coming from the same breeder as I recognise the background, so they might be sharing a lorry later this year ?

When I bought mine from Scotland last year, I put a deposit down and the contract stated I would get reimbursement should I not have a love foal at weaning. When he was due to be transported I insured him with SEIB
