I want to cancel my pony's insurance and switch it to NFU so they are both with the same policy. On the current policy it says if you cancel without making a claim you get a refind of the unexpired part of the policy but there are no explanations as to what this is and the help desk person spoke as much English as I speak whatever her language was....

Does anyone know? It's E&L insurance she's with at the mo...

If you have held your insurance for more than one year with them (ie you have renewed) then you should be entitled to a pro rata return of the premium you have paid (ie get the money back for the time you don't hold the cover with them). However, if you are cancelling within the first year of insurance you may be charged a time on risk which is likely to be a percentage per month NOT pro rata'd. Often if cancelling after the first 6 mths of cover then you may not get any refund if the policy is an annual one.

Check through your policy wording and cancellation terms as it'll differ from one company to the next.

they just sent the renewal thing which reminded me to do it - she's been insured with them for three years.

That's easy then just don't renew, cancel the direct debit and change to NFU, much better

Ideal timing then, as above, just don't renew but take out new Policy elsewhere. You have completed the 12 month Policy Term you originally signed up for so should face no charges or similar.

If poss try and overlap new policy with old for two weeks as new policy usually won't cover for anything other than accident for first 14 days.

If just up for renewal then yes lapse the policy and it will then not cost you anything (providing you also cancel your DD if paying that way). As mentioned though, check out 14 day restrictions on new policy for any illnesses.

Watch out re overlapping polices as "double insuring" isn't allowed & may even be illegal as you could be accused of trying to claim off both policies and end up with both being cancelled without your claim being covered.
Also make sure the DD gets cancelled for the E&L policy - try to get written/e-mail confirmation from them if possible. Suggestion would be to send your cancellation instructions by recorded delivery or e-mail where you ask for confirmation the message has been received & read.
