When asked for the full medical history of your horse when making a claim, do they mean what they have been treated for in the past prior to the claim?
Yes they basically want to know what's happened in the past. However, I take that to mean what you've claimed for previously. So if, for instance, you're claiming for a virus I wouldn't put that once he had a sniffle that required the vet to take a look 10yrs ago. You may find they won't cough up saying he's had the problem before. For example, once a farrier cut my chap's feet back so much he had to have hospital treatment. However, I paid for it personally. When I was claiming for something else later I made the mistake of saying that he was treated for sore feet and now there's an exemption on them which is ridiculous as it was caused by the farrier and not due to competition etc. So if he ever injures his feet for whatever reason I won't be able to make a claim.
My horse is insured with NFU. When I make a claim, I fill in my part and then pass the form to my vet. He sends it back to me and it contains a printout of every visit he has EVER made to my horse. I have to forward that to NFU with the claim. So they know all the medical history of the horse - with the current vet.
It's every visit you have ever had from your vet (incl jabs). Just ask your vet and they'll give you a print out. If you have changed vets, you'll need to get one from your old vet too.
Yes, they want the full medical history off the vet. My boy had both of his eyes examined 2 years. He had a cataract diagnosed in his left eye. When I made a claim last year the vet revealed his full medical history. when it was all sorted I reiceved a letter from the insurance company, exempting all for hooves, and both of his eyes, even though there is nothing wrong with his right eye. I have spoken to vets and insurance company and I cannot get the exclusion removed off his right eye, which is normal and healthy.
