Insurance Question - Loss of Horse

Hello,

I very sadly lost my horse this week. Having never been in this position with an insured horse I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do? I guess I have to notify them? Any advice welcome 😓

Just give them a call and let them know you'd like to cancel your policy and why.
Assuming you're not trying to make a death claim it'll be very simple.

If you want to make a claim then I suspect they'll need a report from your vet as to why 1) they weren't told before you PTS and had a chance to agree and 2) how the PTS met the criteria (which are very strict, it's a hard claim to make)

Thank you. I'll speak to my vet beforehand. I'm not really wanting to make a claim as it won't replace him but I'll see what the vet says :) I doubt it will be worth the pain :(

Sorry to hear you lost your horse.


Call them and they will need sometimes a PM before they set a claim in motion - but call them and tell them what happened, but most likely they will tell you to download a form which you fill in then send it to your vet to compplete their section. i
 
Great thank you. The claim ran out (moneywise) a long time ago but is open until October if you get what I mean..? He's been cremated so no chance of a PM but I'll speak to my vet and then the insurance afterwards. As I said if I can't claim for loss it's not the end of the world, he's gone and can't be replaced. Thanks for the help :)

I am sorry you have lost your horse. I understand what you mean when you say he can't be replaced but this is what you pay your insurance premium for. I'm surprised the vet didn't tell you that you had to contact your insurance company prior to PTS, unless of course the reason was an emergency. If he was PTS on humane grounds, i.e. because his injury/illness meant he could not be saved i.e broken leg or other type of scenario then there wouldn't have been time which is understandable. The value of the horse will come in handy even if you do not want another and is worth the time it takes to fill in a claim form.

I'm sorry for your loss WB. I have never claimed for loss of horse as I dont want to jump through hoops having a PM etc, but I only insure mine for a token amount to get vets fees cover so its not worth the hassle anyway.
 
No I don't want any agro, losing him was hard enough :(

Like you, he was only insured for the minimum to get the vets fees cover (which he's milked over the last 9 years �� Must be about 18k ��).
 
So sorry to hear about the loss of your horse. If the pts met BEVA guidelines then you should get a payout plus usually the cost of the pts and disposal. If the pts does not meet BEVA guidelines (your vet should be able to advise you on this) then the insurance won't pay out.

Basically BEVA guidelines are very tights and basically say that the horse had to be pts to alleviate immediate suffering and that there was no treatment that could be tried.
 
Really sorry for your loss, it's so hard.
When I lost mine the vet did the claim for me, so I didn't have to deal with it. It was relatively painless, in the grand scheme of things. And as I was paying monthly the insurance company stopped the payments themselves, I didn't have to pay up to the end of the policy year.
 
Thank you really helpful. The vets are dealing with it. He had a rare condition(s) that could not be treated. He became ill in October and tried everything to do so. Prognosis was fairly dire.... We'll see, I guess I having nothing (more) to lose trying :)
 
So sorry for your loss.

Keep trying with the insurance. I know you don't want another and no amount of money can make you feel any better but just think, if you did get a little money at least you could put it to good use, a nice drawing of your boy maybe?
