We've put a claim in for horse's arthritic hock (first claim I've made) and I got a letter today from them saying that they need a printout from the vet's showing all routine and non-routine work they've done on him before they can progress the claim further. Is this normal for a first claim or indeed any claim?

Yes standard practise

They need to see if you've had treatment for anything similar in the past, I had to provide 8 years worth of printouts from three vets when I first made a claim

Yes, they will want to make sure it not something that he had before you insured him with them. Just pass it on to your vet to fill in and send back to them.

It's totally normal. It does actually say on their claim form that they require this (having just filled out a claim form of theirs I know this, and it's my 2nd claim) so it's quite standard and nothing particualr to do with your case I'm sure.
