What does everyone pay for insurance for your foals and who are you with? I'm shopping around at the moment and they all seem to be quite expensive! Cheapest so far are e and l but have heard lots of bad reviews.. all the others are in between £25 - £45 per month which I'm being told is expensive! Are foals more expensive to insure than horses? Thanks in advance :)

Please please please don't go with E&L, they're the cheapest but the absolute worst at settling claims. Ask your vet - every vet I've asked has agreed they're dreadful. I had all my horses insured with them for years but had to go to the ombudsman to get a straightforward vets fees claim settled. Needless to say, I cancelled all of my policies the day after the settlement cheque cleared!!

I insured my now 2-year old as a foal with AmTrust Equine, so far so good and very competitively priced. I can also recommend KBIS (who settled a claim for vets fees for one of my older horses within days).

Think for foals they say the insured value should be either the purchase price or for homebred foals about 3x the stud fee. Difficult to say without knowing the insured value of your foal but £25 a month doesn't sound expensive to me. But definitely worth shopping around.

Thank you for your reply! No I don't think I will go with e and l as have heard some really bad reviews about them never paying out etc and what's the point of even having them insured if your going to incur those types of problems?!

The second cheapest have actually been KBIS and they seem to be popular so will probably end up going with them I just wanted to check that 25 per month was a reasonable amount for a foal that's not going to be doing anything! His insured value is only 700 as well so not as if he's mega expensive!

All I want the insurance for is vets fees and I guess third party? To be honest I'm not exactly sure what I will need for a foal that's not going to be doing much but the main ones seem to be vets fees, third party and personal accident? I won't be showing him or anything like that.

I had one of my ponies insured with Petplan for less than you have been quoted from a yearling to 3 years old.think the excess was £500 with £3.5K vets fees. I would shop about, a youngster at grass shouldn't cost that much to insure for fees and liability only.

Cheapest I got was £21.45 with Petplan (if I remember correctly) and most expensive was about £37 with NFU- over 12 months was as much as the 15 year old gelding about and about competing!). However, I have always insured with NFU previously, who have been fantastic, but not sure I want to pay that much for a foal.

If you're a BHS Gold member then you will already have PL included with that sub which will cover you; likewise if household contents are in your name, you should be covered with that as foal will be a 'pet' but do check beforehand. If you can get rid of those through other means that takes a lot off the premium cost. I also find it cheaper to pay for the whole year at once if you can do that as if you make a death claim it has to be paid in full (the whole year total) before they will pay you out and it's one less thing to hassle about if the worse happens IMO. Vet cover works out at about £250 or less/more on top of your normal premium and it does depend a lot on how much you have him insured for plus which excess you choose too.
I'm with KBIS, been with them for years and wouldn't use anyone else at all; quick, very efficient and always know what you're talking about which helps a lot at what can be a stressful time. Think Merlin was about £270 for £2000 plus £3000 of vet cover which is pretty reasonable I think.

PS, I have BHS cover so save a lot on that as it covers all of my horses, not just him.

Thanks for the replies, pet plan came out at about 30 per month and they required a mortality cert as well which I wasn't planning on doing. KBIS have quoted 25 which is the cheapest I've found so far (bar e and l) so probably going to go with them as have heard lots of good reviews! I'm not sure why the price is so high as people are telling me they pay the same for their older horses who are out and about so it doesn't make sense! Got about 10 quotes so far though and there all a similar price! Did want to go with NFU but they quoted something ridiculous like 45 which I'm not paying for a foal! Maybe premiums have just gone up? Or there's more risk of an accident with a foal? Who knows!

I insured my foal with petplan as the others are with them and I have had no problems with them paying out. I had to wait until he was a month old to insure and anything under a year needs a mortality certificate which cost me £80. I think they see them as more of a risk at that age, but I don't know what difference the mortality cert makes! I pay £23 a month for him.

Both my mare and 5 month old foal are insured with SEIB - they were brilliant with my claim last year. The mare is slightly more a month than the foal but over all it's about £75 for the two of them. They initially tried to do Milo as a yearling, not a foal and when I corrected them the premium went up slightly so presume that they consider foals higher risk than a slightly older horse. He's insured for vets fees, death, pl etc but as 'at grass', no shows or anything like that.
