Any recommendations for decent but less expensive dog insurance (vet fees and PL)? I've always had our terrier with Petplan but his renewal has gone up by 20% this time. He's eight now and we've only ever claimed twice - once for £550 and once for £50 - both times when he ate Bad Things. They've also said that his premium will go up quite a lot at the 2026 renewal because he will be officially "old".

I took him off their lifetime insurance a few years ago because it was getting so expensive, and I could see that by the time we actually needed the insurance (i.e. when he's 10+) it would have become unaffordable.

I'm well up on horse insurance but am just very short of time to do the necessary digging on dog insurance, so any recommendations welcomed!

I'll have a dig around and see who I can find with the same underwriters (Allianz). Unfortunately I've found that "you get what you pay for" is not always true so I no longer assume that expensive = good.

I switched to Admiral. They did (for my two younger dogs) really good policies on a multi pet basis.
I have the best policy for them with £10,000 vets fees and other benefits which when comparing cost a lot with other companies

I'm with animal friends and they were absolutely brilliant with my old dog, can't recommend them highly enough. I had her on a recycling/ lifetime policy and they paid for medication for her for years as well as emergency treatment and treatments as she got older. They never quibbled over anything and usually paid within 48 hours. They do it so that you pay 20% of each claim but it makes their premiums affordable and I was happy with that compromise and found it to be good value.

I stopped insurance for Daisy once she reached 8. A bit of a gamble I suppose, but the premiums went up hugely from 8, and I do put money aside each month into a savings account for her. Now in her 11th year she is going to potentially cost me thousands in vets fees due to an issue that has arisen, but I would have paid out more in premiums and the money is in the bank.

We no longer insure our old dog either. The premiums were crazy

Mine are with Animal Friends. I've never ever had a problem with paying. Moti has huge premimiums as he's over 8 on monthly librella, came from abroad and had surgery to his left hind age 2. He now has 2 disc problems in his neck and had xrays CTs US guided steroid injections and now weekly hydrotherapy. They haven't quibbled once. I'm still quids in. Ruby's premium is a lot less as she's 5 and only had one serious operation for a paralysed gut. They paid several thousand for that no problem.
