Rather as a follow on to below post what would you do if for example your horse had been referred, treatment had been given eg box rest after x-rays follow up consultation shows that horse is no better and requires an operation, so far the vet's bill has been around £650, which insurance company will pay, however the op will cost over £2000, insurance company refuse to pay as market value of horse is £1500, would you tell the insurance company that they must pay for euthanasia of the horse/loss of use then?

It would depend on which horse it was and the percentage of recovery would have to be 60% or more chance before I'd part with the money. If the recovery chance was less than that then I would contact the insurance company and ask what they suggest? If they say destroy then I would expect them to pay for the destruction.

Sounds a very unusual case?

Most companies give you a set maxiumu on vets fees per year and or per incident and you can spend that much regardless off how much your horse is worth?

So a £500 horse could still have the £5000 worth of treatment that's generally the standard.

my insurance company paid £3000 last year on my horse when he was only worth £500. i pay them for insurance for vets fees - it's not up to them to say they wont pay because he's not worth that much! it's not car insurance!!!!!

It is a hypothetical case (at the moment lol) and is a worst case scenario, am insured with Brightwells (did it whne bought horse at ascot) However it was only when I went to claim that I realised it is a subsidary of E+L

, I have been told it is likely that insurance will not pay for the op (even though though she is covered for up to £4750 per incident) as it will be cheaper for them to destroy the horse than pay costs of op

However I am hoping it will not come to this, will find out Friday!

I would suggest reading the small print of the policy. I think if they insure for 'x' amount of vets fees then thats what you will get BUT this is E+L the dodgiest of all insurance companies.

Hey - nobody slates E & L in my earshot! I was pulling my hair out trying to get the money I was claiming for the death of my beloved Jake last April ...... then Shock!
