Just for an idea of how many people insure their horses, who does? If not, why?

What level of insurance have you? How much for vets bills, public liability and for what activities? Do you lie a little about what activities you do, to cut down the cost?

Insure 2 with NFU for death & vets fees. One old boy no longer insured. Have BHS gold cover for liability. No I do not lie about what activities they do as this constitutes fraud. Us claims handlers are very good at sussing out fraudelent claims. People who lie about the use of their horses usually trip themselves up somewhere. The result is:

1. Claim not paid.
2. Policy may well be voided/renewal not invited.
3. Above would need to be disclosed to any new insurer so then you would not get insurance elsewhere.

So simply not worth it. Insure for what you do then no problem.

Thanks for that, I was meaning more along the lines of going XC once or twice a year with the horse but not stepping up a level of insurance.

Also, I know this is a silly question, but does a horse need to be vetted to get insurance?

I've got both insured with NFU, one for showjumping and ancillary [etc fees etc] and the other for more general riding club activities - he'll probably be a dressage horse with his breeding but this isnt proven yet. Both are only for liability and vets fees, cant afford loss of use...

I insure 2 with Petplan Equine. Expensive, but they were very good when my old boy fractured his leg a couple of years ago. I wouldn't lie about what they do - my 20 year old is still insured for unaffiliated dressage (which includes hunter trials and I think some eventing as well even though I only do unaffil dressage once in a blue moon). It isn't really worth lying as it hardly makes much difference to the premium anyway. Mine are insured for third party liability, vets fees and death/disposal.

If going XC just once or twice you can always ask for insurance co. to include it for the day.....or just take the chance.

Vets certs only required if sum insured over a certain figure, or if you had the horse vetted they will ask for a copy anyway.
