Hello helpful team!

Finally got my Labrador puppy :-) over the moon with him.

I want insurance but not sure what to go for? Thinking of paying between 15-20 a month... Too much? Too little? Obviously want full cover, good amount of vet fees etc. Had a look earlier, e&l came up with a fairly good quote, but heard negative reports about them? That's only with equine cover though.

Interested in what people pay and who are known to be good please?

Mince pie to all who can help!

Thanks x

I work at a vets so see quite a few different companies, Petplan and More Than are quite good. If you pm me I can tell you some of the ones to avoid!!

Be really careful with the small print.. some of the cheaper policies only cover you for the first £500 or you have to pay a 1/4 of the vet fees etc. Also make sure you get a LIFE policy.. these will then cover your dog for the same medical condition/problem for life (as long as you keep paying your premiums!!). Therefore if your dog gets a long term skin condition at 6 months old they will still pay for medication etc for the rest of its life rather than the 1 year like the equine policies.

Hope that helps abit. In my experience you will probably be looking £20-£25 per month for a good policy. :)

Avoid E&L like the plague! Worth speaking to your vet on who they recommend and which companies they would accept direct claims with. I'd recommend Pet plan. More expensive but lifetime cover and they cover more (prescription diets, hyrotherapy etc) and they are so easy to deal with. xx

Always look for lifetime policy and for that size dog at least 6k per year x

I have a GSD and he is 6 and has been insured wwith Petplan since a puppy. i got the lifetime cover which I am really glad I did becuase at 18months he was diagnosed with epilepsy, and so Petplan pay for his medication and blood tests, and will do for the rest of his life. They have never quibbled about paying out and I send in a claim every six months and they pay it to me within a couple of weeks. Can't fault them.
