I think its about time I insured my horse!!! His old owner has been insuring him for me for the last year since I got him under her yard insurance, but as he is 2 1/2 hours away from her yard, it might be a good idea to insure him myself!!

How much for though, havent a clue how much he's actually worth, and do I insure for his worth or less to keep the premium low???

He's the horse in my sig, 15.2hh, American Pacer x cob, piebald 6 yr old gelding. Shows county level has potential for HOYS, and jumps unaffiliated, though will hopefully affiliate next year. So to replace him it would probably cost over £5000???? I just dont know!

Also insurance companies, I've always insured with E&L and never had a problem with them paying out previously, but some people would never touch them with a barge pole!!

Anyway, any help accepted gratefully.

For many of us we insure to cover vet fees. So insure the horse for a mimimal value (so under £5k) which will keep your premiums down.

NFU is who I use and would never change.

NFU is great, my horse is insured for vet fees, public liability. Can't remember what else? At a value of £4500 and I pay £34.

i'm getting my pony next week and will insure him with NFU...they included everything i wanted and the price wasn't extortionate.

i have heard a few horror stories with E&L and though i don't know from my own experience, the amount of people who have come out and said they would not insure with them (and the stories with regards to their claims) is quite shocking!! it definitely made me think twice.

i think you get what you pay for at the end of the day

I currently use scottish equestrian who I have never had any problems with but touch wood have never had to claim off them yet. I have also used carriage house insurance before who were very quick to pay up when my horse had to be pts.

Does the owner know you are taking out insurance? Just checking as I believe it is illegal to insure a horse twice? Also, I'd guess it would be up to the owner how much you insure the horse for as it will be them getting the money should the worst happen?

I am the owner of him, so yes I know I am taking out insurance haha!! His old owner has all her horses insured under her yard insurance as a bulk buy type thing and he has been insured by her since he was born so his worth has never been changed. She didnt take him off the insurance to help me out while I was a student, and now I am working I have to pay for everything.

Aww thats great! I miss seeing the pics of him. Have a real sot stop for coloureds! How's his jumoing coming on?

Just to get back to the post abit, I would insure him for around 3 - 4k. Even if you went and insured him for 10k if anything did happen to him the insurance company only pay what they think he was worth. So by insuring him for around 4k you can easily justify his worth.

He's fab, jumpings great competing on saturday I think. Trying to qualify for HOYS search for a star this year, also for RIHS with the BSPA.

Ok, My dad thinks we should insure him for £5000 so going to ring around for quotes and have a chat to each insurance company about it all, they may advise me insuring him for less... doubt it though!

I use Petplan- I used E&L with my old pony and I think they paid out on a claim (can't remember it was 15 years ago) but I'd never insure with them again based on the horror stories you hear.
I tried to get cover with NFU but they would only allow me if I took out car or building & contents insurance so I was thoroughly miffed about it and told them so. I didn't need either at the time so was bloody mad!

You tell 'em Law!!! Yeh I heard that too about NFU, am going to try KBIS when I can get through, as my lorry is insured with them, they might give me a discount!!!!!!!!!
