Back when I had my first pony 25 years ago, we didnt have insurance, vets cover or 3rd party.. Think this was realatively normal back then? I was a teenager so cant really remember?

Up until recently I had my dogs insured until the premiums got silly, we have savings so will take a chance. I now have a pony that will eventually (hopefully) be broken to drive.. I have just started taking him out in hand and I'm guessing that I should have 3rd party insurance..?

Do all equine companies do this? Not sure if people are able to recommend on here?

Many thanks

What you need as a minimum is public liability insurance for both dog and horse. This is what protects you if you are sued by someone else because of an incident involving your animal. It isn't expensive (bhs membership is about £50 and includes this). It does protect you from losing everything if your animal causes an accident.

echo this. 3rd party, or public liability insurance, is a must. you could be sued for thousands if not more, if your horse injures someone/something. I would always recommend getting insurance for vet fees too, as you never know. i bought my boy in good faith at the time when he was fit and well, 2 years later im looking at a vet bill which would have crippled me if i didn't have insurance. i know the monthly payments are a pain but i think they are very much worth it. i have my insurance with E&L who i think are quite reasonable, and my premium includes third party/liability cover.

I assume that you haven't yet tried to claim anything.

OP, BHS Gold membership is very good value. Have you got public liability insurance for your dog? I refuse to pay the premiums for vet cover etc for the dogs but would like PL for them and haven't found a way of doing that yet.

I haven't personally had any problems with claims, insurance have paid previous bill, and will be paying my current bill (minus excess)! But I'm pretty sure my horse is now uninsurable due to his condition...

Check your house insurance, many policies cover all third party risks, dogs and horses included.

Otherwise, BD affiliate membership used to be the cheapest way to get it.

Pearlsasinger, No I havent... and claiming became a nightmare with them. Premiums went up so did excess, would rather risk it/ stick it on credit card now.. Have had 7 rescue dogs in 16 years and its been hit and miss with all of them..Although NFU were great for first few years of my current 3.
My pony will be a driving pony (hopefully) and BDS have 3rd party with their membership, will also look into BHS gold..
Thanks all

It isn't necessary to be a dressage competitor to have BD affiliate membership, if anyone needs third party and if it's still cheapest.

BDS members do get TPL - http://www.britishdrivingsociety.co.uk/ less cover than BHS but cheaper.

For dogs;- Dogs Trust membership give third party cover for £20 a year. (less for pensioners) as not all home policies give cover.

Thank you, our home policy (Aviva) doesn't give 3rd party cover, except if eg a roof tile falls on a passer-by. I shall join DT forthwith. I thought there must be at least one organisation which did something similar to BHS.

Shah's mum - I was wondering if Rjd84 hd claimed with E&L. I haven't heard of any-one who has ever made a successful claim with E&L.
