I've always insured my riding horse and with the previous 3 have claimed quite a bit, they were all insured with Emporium but i switched from them when the 17.5% excess bit came in.
Current horse has been insured with SEIB and I paid 430 last year. *on laptop with has no gbp sign!!

I keep the horses value minimal, I'm not bothered about loosing the money i paid for him- I just want peace of mind for vet bills. This does work- other horses were insured for far less than they had paid out in vet bills, it just means as above if they die i cant afford a new horse.

I've just been a bit shocked to open my renewal and see my premium is doubled from last. Considering all he's seen a vet for really is jabs and i had him doped for a sheath clean! It seems excessive? It's priced me out of having him insured or at least by them. As they were my cheapest quote the past two years I'm not holding out much hope at beating it but any suggestions?

I have WHW for the retired ones because I'd never really do lameness investigations etc with them. Not really worried about colic surgery as I'm not sure I'd do that either.
I may just have to wing it with a few empty credit cards.

Insurance has gone insane - my Landrover has doubled despite 10 years no claims!
I wont take it personally then! I also had a renewal this week for my little clapped out van which i mainly use to ferry the dogs around now and that was a fair bit more than expected.

Ive just claimed with E and L and did not have a 17.5 % to pay 😳
Really? I thought that was their standard thing now for vet fees?
Was your policy taken out before this new thing though? I didn’t have to pay it on my last one either but don’t * think that’s the case now.
They never really pushed my premiums up even though it was them I’ve claimed through.
Maybe I’ll have another look at them.

My eldest horse is 25 years old. He's very fit but I do not have him insured. The last insurance quote I had for him there were so many exclusions that it wasn't worth insuring him. About 6 weeks ago he had colic & my wife & I had decided that if he had colic and a couple of injections didn't work we would have him put down. The vet scanned him & decided that there was a kink in his intestines and some things had moved. The vet said that it appeared that he would need an operation but it was unlikely they would have to remove anything. We decided we'd have him operated on. We took him to the surgery and handed him over. They operated on him, it took just over 3 hours & they finished around 10pm. We had a phone call saying the operation went well. The next day around 1.00pm we went to see him.... his ears were pricked, he gave a little snort and walked over to the stable door to greet us. He was just like his normal self. He stayed at the vets for 5 days & then came home. In the last 6 weeks he has got better & better, bandages came off after around 7 days & vet has been to see him a couple of times. In our eyes he's a very special horse, we have had him for 19 year, he is one of the family. As I said he's not insured & we've just paid slightly under £7000 for the operation & the post operation care. Yes it's a lot of money to pay out but he's so very special; to us so it was money well spent.

As for vehicle insurance I was quoted over £1000 for comprehensive insurance o my Ford Fiesta Ecco. I'm 69 years old, years of no claims bonus, no traffic offences against me & they quote that? I decided to look elsewhere & got comprehensive, protected no claims, 9 yrs bonus for £242.91......... Can't understand why the massive difference.

I can’t actually find the excess explained anywhere on the Emporium site 🤷🏻‍♀️
I’m hoping it’s changed as their quite is half the price which seems silly as it’s them I’ve claimed through.

My 13 year old dog been insured since birth never had any claims till cruciate injury, we sorted that with rest and anti inflammatory, then he had a lump removed as vet thought it was cancer, but it was begnine, but the word cancer was on his records. Vet refused to remove the word, his premiums jumped up to £70, this September renewal came, they wanted £170!!! At his age , going on 14 , I won’t put him through invasive ops, all his legs are excluded, so are lumps and teeth, so I stopped it. He will get what he needs till the day comes when he goes over rainbow bridge

I took out insurance a few years ago with a % of vets fees. It was much cheaper and it worked out that on a 2k claim, the percentage was less than extra premiums so I'd only be worse off on big claims.
Who are you with? Do you know what the % is?
I suppose that’s another way of looking at it. I just liked my old £150 or whatever it was!

Have you had a quote with NFU?

If you want vet fees they can be reasonable, very good payers, but they’ve paid out 2 claims in full for me so my renewal has gone up to £1,600 a year including the trailer. Can’t really quibble as the claims are paperless and so easy to deal with.

Might be worth calling them as I think they keep changing policy terms.

My 7yo is with them. Initially no 17.5% but then they introduced it a year or two later. But I’ve also just insured both my 4yos with them and when I asked they said the terms had changed and it no longer was 17.5%. Think excess was possibly higher but don’t quote me.
Irrespective they seem to be best value and I’ve claimed on both horse and dog with them without issue.

I especially like you can insure a valuable horse for £500 just to get vets cover.

This was with amtrust who don't do horse insurance anymore. I was saving £300 so at 15%, it had to be a bigger claim before I was out of pocket. Plus some I was comparing had excesses of £250 instead of £150.

It's not a simple calculation and depends on number of claims and size of claims but if there's a big difference in premiums then you could be better or worse off.

I must be the only one whose insurance hasn't gone up but it's seibs veteran policy which only pays out on external injuries with some extras added.

That’s interesting, perhaps I’ll give them a call. I found them slow to pay claims but they were always very nice to deal with and always did pay up.

Well maybe not! See below they may have changed again 🤞
Certainly my old policies had a fixed excess but when I bought and went to insure Ziggy two years ago now it was 17.5% of the claim and I want to say still a fixed excess also.
I really hope they have scrapped that as I do actually rate them these days.

How is he doing now? I hope he Is making a good recovery 🤞
He's doing very well, his bandages came off a few weeks ago & the incision is healing great. He still has some swelling but the vet assures us it's normal & will go over time. I think you'll understand when I say "He's got his smile back on his face". If anyone came up to his stable he'll greet them & have fuss & you would never know what he went through 6 weeks ago. I'm almost in tears of happiness typing this, he means so much to me. Thank you for asking how he is. 👍😁 (he is the first one in my line of pictures underneath my post.
